Hey everyone, i'm looking into getting a new MSD set up for my father and I's 65 plymouth belvedere. It has the orange box mopar ignition right now and i think its time to upgrade. The engine is a mild 440 that pushes the car 12.70s in the quarter at 3725 lbs. Any advice on what set up we should look into as i have no real knowledge about this sort of thing. Is there really any large gains with the MSD? or would maybe the chrome mopar ignition be a better fit? My dad also wanted me to ask if the MSD will work with our current distributor? Thanks Mike

Yes, you can use most any Mopar distributor as a "trigger".

I use a later electronic unit.

I like the old school 6AL. It's cheap and has a rev limiter.

They are very easy to hide under the battery tray in our cars and you really can't tell my '63 has one in it. I ran the wires up underneath the water pump housing and connected to the distributor.

I doubt that you'll see any performance gains but idle clears up and they run a lot better at low speed.

You could also go to a hotter Chrome Chrysler Electronic Ignition box for the street with a blaster 2 coil or Gold Race CEI box & S/S blaster coil for at the track, they plug right into your factory harness {then keep the Orange box for roadside emergency's}... The MSD will help clean stuff up a little, not a big HP difference, but they do have a longer multiple spark over 20+degrees & most can be had with multiple different electronics, tac's port, chips, rev limmiters &/or timing retards etc., if you keep them in a cool area & firmly rubber mount them, they seem to last a little longer.... Good luck
