I have heard about this, never experienced it....until today lol.

1962 Belvedere 318 4bbl, 264 cam, 9.0:1, headers, 2 1/2" dual exhaust w/ H pipe. 600cfm Edelbrock is tuned in pretty good, timing is set at 17* initial 33* total. Has always ran great, no flooding issues, plugs are a nice tan color after 1100 miles on the rebuilt motor. Stock mechanical pump. Drove it last night, no issues. Starts on a turn, turn and a half. Doesn't buck the starter at all.

Worked on the front brakes this morning, didn't even touch the engine. Go to start it an hour ago and BOOM!!!!!! followed by smoke. First thought was I blew the engine, everything looked good. Neighbors were ready to call the fire dept. lol. Pulled the primary and spun it over, no problems. While looking under the car I found the carnage. I was laughing so hard I cried.

It is a Jegs exhaust system, non welded chambered muffler. No obstruction in the tail pipe that I could find. Too much fuel, and from where?

I bet you can't keep a straight face if you return it to Jegs to claim a warranty replacement. :icon_cool:

Nice one! Something like that could give you a coronary!

My older brother had an old bread truck that he hauled junk in. I watched him heading down the road and it happened to him. Thought he was going to wreck the old truck. Muffler looked like yours! You gotta laugh.

You might check for the carb leaking down after you shut her off. Could have been a fluke, one time deal, too.

You didn't find whats left of a mouse nest about 20' behind the car?

I had an old Granada ....used to turn off the key while rolling down the road in gear ,pump the crap out of the gas peddel then turn key back on...thats what my muffler did the last time I tried it.

Funny, I had the el-cheapo Summit Turbo muffler on my A100 with a /6. I never had a blast like yours. As a matter a fact, I never knew it had blown until one day I was underneath it and saw close to the same as you. It was never any louder than before it blew. Strange.

I did that with dad's old 64 Ford Wagon one time, laughed my *** off!

That's a new one to me. I've not heard of that happening. Too much has makes the motor backfire and on its way out the exhaust - it blows the muffler??

interesting....

I'm still giggling about it. And my ears are still ringing lol. I have driven it 3 to 4 times a week so I doubt a mouse could have set up shop in it. Luckily I had a fairly new Dynomax Ultra Flow in 2" from my old single exhaust, chopped the ends off and welded on two female 2 1/2" pieces and got it back together. Straight through design so I hope it alleviates any chance of a kaboom.

Said a prayer and twisted the key, started on the first rotation without issue. Drove it around, laid some rubber. Sounds good. But I will be nervous everytime I turn the key, kinda like a mobster who has a hitman after him lmao

I'll send them an email with pictures and see what they say lol.

Happened to me. was checking out a new nitrous system I just installed on my 68 Roadrunner, checking to see if the nitrous solenoid was working and checking for leaks I tap the fire button a couple of times, cool it works. ya right, about a half hour later I go to start the car and BOOM!!!!! .the valves on One of the cylinder must have been in the overlap position and the nitrous worked it's way through the motor into the haders and onto the muffler and sat there, add spark and BOOM! Ears where ringing, every dog for 5 miles was barking and my right muffler was not oval shaped anymore LOL

i heard of this, but never seen it!

That would make me poo my pants if that happened to me

Had a 65 Mustang with a pair of Smithy's and the pipes exited in front of the rear wheels. Had to run through a tunnel every night on the way home from work and that was the best time. Talk about loud and a nice flash bouncing off the walls. A buddy was behind me on his bike one night and the next evening he said his ears were still ringing lol. Never blew any mufflers up though.

blew my moms 58 plymouth muffler cutting it off in a underpass coming home one night in D.C. scared the livin **** out of me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We used to do this in our old 69 Chevy utility truck. On a long downhill back to the shop we'd shut off the ignition, pump the **** out of the gas, coast into the shop and turn the key back on, KABOOM. Scared the hell out of the bosses. Finally blew the muffler off the headpipe.

The coasting with key off and turning it back on with a big kaboom and 10 foot flames out the tail pipe works really well with cherry bomb mufflers, used to do that in my 79 Dodge Magnum!!!!

Lol, great stories. I just finished putting on the other ultra flow (straight through) so hopefully the lack of an enclosed chamber aleviates and more kabooms. Sounds better too!

Now its a waiting game for my new leaf springs. Poor thing creaks like an old ship any time I jack it up or down.

That's a defect...lol. I've blown them up but it was usually on nitrous or gear braking in a higher gear and high rpm. Fuel loads it up and "Boom".

Ive done it twice and both times it happened it was the carb. Once because of garbage in it from a filter going bad and the last time because a bad O-ring in the ThermoQuad carb.
