Hi, I have a 66 Sat with a 383. The old starter started to fail and by the sounds of things it seemed the relay way kicking in and out causing the starter flutter. At first I thought the battery was bad so I put in a new one. I was able to get the car home but the starter still didnt sound right. I bought a new mini starter since the old one wouldnt spin. Still having the stutter (solenoid kicking in/out) I can jump the hot to the relay and it cranks fine. I can jump the hot to the solenoid direct starts fine.

I have 11.4 volts on the yellow wire that feeds the relay and 11.4 on the brown wire that is ignition 2 going to the ballast resistor.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem and found a solution. I could wire in a starter button but dont want to start bypassing things. I am trying to stay as original as possible.

Thanks, Ed

what condition is your postive battery cable, if you have a old battery cable sometime the wire in the casing is causing the problem. Not letting the full power go to the relay. Just a though

I had a similar issue and mine turned out to be the starter relay working some times and not others. The right way to solve the issue is to go through every component in the starting system until you find the issue. Load test the battery, clean the battery cables, check the condition of the cables, check the cable connection on the block and starter, etc, etc. I know it's not fun to do, but it is the only way.

CHECK THE FIRE WALL PLUG THE RED WIRE AT TIME GETS BURN UP AT THE CONNECTION
THE FAST REPAIR IS TO SPLICE A WIRE ACROSS THE MALE /FEMALE CONNECTION POINT

Thanks everyone for your input and help. It ended up being a bad ground coming from the park/neutral safety switch causing the relay to kick in and out. Once I corrected the ground it turned over like a true blue mopar.

Seeeee, connections,connections,etc.

thanks for posting a follow up ed. Was the NSS wire melted, or loose connection at the ignition switch? When I've had issues with nss it would not crank at all, wondering where your bad ground was located.
