Great thread, I'm running a 451 as well and if it makes you feel any better I've had no detonation at all running 9.8:1 (160 psi) with ported 452 iron heads and a rather small cam. My motor likes a little more timing than suggested, actually it's seams to run it's best just locked in at 36 (Backing the initial off results in sluggish acceleration). I plan on getting it on the dyno early spring to get it dialed in now that I'm confident in the setup as far as carb and distributor goes.
The cam is a Comp solid lifter 110 lobe separation, .488 int .501 ex, 268 duration, 1,500-5,800 rpm
