My new to me 64 Polara

I'm not nuts about the tail pipes on this one.

I will be going through these photos looking for clues as to what My car needs. Exhaust tips, mirrors, trim, and the like.

Last year in high school I found a '64 Polara 500. Bought it from a guy who was using it to haul stuff back and forth to his truck patch. Paid $125 for it and drove it home. I was going to use it as a field car (living on a large farm) but the more I looked at it I realized what great shape it was in. Cleaned it up, got it inspected and drove it for about three years. I drove it to work during the week and to the track on the weekends. Black, black, black, dark tinted glass all around and a ton of chrome.

I found a set of Cragar SS, had 50 series under the back. Pulled the heads off the 383 and replaced them with a set that had "the works" done to them. Replaced the stock cam with a performance cam, four bll. and intake. Found a set of used headers. Replaced the 8 3/4 with a Dana, 456 ratio (that really woke that 383 up). Had the car in the low thirteens all day long. Really had a lot of fun with that car.

It looked just like this one minus the hood scoop.

I had the 727. Great looking interior with the console.

The exhaust tips on this one look great. I'm a fan.

I have seen the regular cheap mirrors or the remote control models with the matching companion mirror. No Twin post. I sure do like the looks of them compared to the standard plain base.

I have a twin post mirror coming tomorrow. I'll give it a go and see how I like it.

I am still chasing my hard starting issue. I have an ECU coming from Halifaxhops. He has the best parts and he tests all the ECU's that he ships out. You know it will be good right out of the box, unlike most of the electronics components they sell now days. I have the correct ballast and a known good distributor to try as well. All the electrical checks look good and it only acts up when cold. It's time to start replacing things I can't test or see if it's bad.

If your car has the original big Chrysler starter, replace it with the small Nippodenso one. I used the one for early 2000's 360 Dakota, available from most parts jobbers, on my '64. After the change, my car acted like it had fuel injection when it started. I think the old starter was p;ulling so much power, there was not much left for ignition system.

I have thought of that. I put a Nip starter on my 66 and it really spins over fast. I did a voltage drop test and it went from 12.5 battery voltage down to 10.9 during cranking. That is close to what the ECU's minimum voltage is I think. I wish I had a Sun Vat 40 and could do an amp draw test on that starter. Voltage doesn't tell the whole story. The oem Mopar starter on it seems to spin it over fairly fast but I sure don't know how many amps it is drawing. I will switch out some parts early next week just in case. I have the proper ballast (points ballast in there now) I will also try a known good ECU (from Halifaxhops) and see if that makes a difference.

My first new part for the car was a high beam headlamp.  I closed the door at the parts store and the mirror glass fell out of the drivers mirror. I found one of those twin post mirrors that I thought might look period correct. I might have to see how it looks on the passenger side and get another one. I also ordered some door lock knobs because mine were missing. I love little trinkets that I can install in a few min that make an overall difference. Just a new part, a little adjustment, or a spray of lube for a squeaky door hinge makes for a nice improvement. I am compiling a list of small parts like some weather-stripping, body bumpers, turn signal lenses and the like jut to improve the looks and function of the ol' girl. The mirror looks very nice. It's a OER brand.

Congrats on the sweet new ride Mike!

Maybe some pipes like these? They turn down but back too.

Thanks for the great photo. That's what the need to be for sure. Whoever did the exhaust did a nice job. Every pipe is meticulously welded including the chrome extensions. The system looks custom bent too. I have a friend that still has his bender and does custom exhaust that could fix me up. Thanks again for the great photos.

Thanks, I will keep it just like it is. I like the stance and the wheels. The color is nice too. It looks pewter in the sun. Yes the electronic ignition is a plus. A lot of good things have allready been done. New dual exhaust, front and rear suspension, fuel tank, conversion driveshaft. A lot of things I don't have to do myself.

I wondered why the firewall looked so clean. The wiper motor is under the dash? And guess what, my wipers don't work. :BangHead:

Should be around the center of the dash close to the ashtray.
One screw/bolt that holds it in place. You can feel it with your hand along the lip of the dash.
Remove that and the fuse box will drop down making it easier to see. Only 4 or 5 fuses.

The wipers on my 64 do not work either. I found the left pivot is frozen and so nothing will loosen it up. My car has factory air that makes working under the dash almost impossible. And with the wiper motor under the dash fixing it will
not be easy. I hope yours is just the fuse.

Mine us an Arizona car. They were barely used I bet. Fingers crossed.Do you use Rain X ?

Both of my Dakota pickups ain't working right now and have been that way for months. I know the motor works because it's under the hood and can work on it through the cowl.
