Okay guys, I am considering the purchase of a 68 Road Runner. I need some help figuring out what's going on between the body stampings and the VIN:

VIN on dash reads: RM23H8A***391
The paper title reads: RM23H8A***391
Tranmission boss reads: *** 391

HOWEVER.....

Body stampings on radiator core and trunk support read: G8R***247
Date plate reads: RM23H D62 4 55 ***247

Why would the core and trunk stamping be different than the VIN on the dash and why would the engine code be a G, not an H and the plant be stamped an R and not an A?

The last six digits of the VIN on the data plate and the body stampings match except for the engine and plant code. The last six digits of the VIN on the dash doesn't match the data plate or core supports.

Any help is appreciated.

that was the 1st year for the Road Runner....so maybe the numbers got all goofy......who knows.

The rad support stamping in 68 and earlier was the sales order and NOT the VIN. Also the sales order number is on the fender tag. The fact that the VIN says RM21 and is still attached with rosette rivets, and no evidence of dash frame replacement, I'd say it's a real RR.

Thanks for the reply. The 68 model year was, in fact, the year that had the sales order number stamped on the rad support. Since I have a 69 RR with VIN stamped on the support, it had me all dorked up when I looked at this car.

Its a basket case, but has the original drivetrain and is a 4spd hardtop. The rails are good, but the floors need replaced. Its an original JJ1 car (Medium Gold Metallic) with a black and gold interior, chrome mag 500's and redlines. It seems to be a very unique color combo. I plan on making an offer on the car and save it from the grave. Since its a number's matching car, it seems to be worth the effort.

G8R = G = built at STL plant, 8 = 68 model year R = Belvedere line of cars.

If the body indicates it was built at the STL plant and the VIN indicates it was built at the LR plant (A in the VIN) you might want to do a little more homework before buying.

Is this really how the bottom line of the fender tag reads? Because if it is, there are mistakes on the tag.

Date plate reads: RM23H D62 4 55 ***247

looks to me like it doesnt have the correct fender tag

Unfortunately, it sounds like a vin swap to me. If rad support and gutter matches fender tag then, it has to be a swap.

i missed the body stampings matching the fender tag. i would agree 100% with you.....
someone must have had issues with the original paperwork or worse....
