This is weird , happened a couple times last year. Picked up my car from storage Saturday , turned over good but would not start. Didn't want to drain the battery so after 4 or 5 tries , hooked up a charger/booster. Fired right up. Battery was new last spring and I had it at home while in storage on a trickle charger. Switched it to other batteries , every couple weeks , that were pulled for winter. Anyone ever have this ?? Thanks in advance.

My car sits from November to March every year for winter storage. When ready to get it out, I bring a small gas can with me and pour a splash of gas directly in the carb. It avoids long cranking cycles and always starts on first few cranks. It avoids draining the battery with excessive cranking until the mechanical fuel pump can pump some gas to the carb. I've never found the need to do any kind of charging of the battery over winter months. I just disconnect the battery for safety when in long term storage.
Even after out for a drive, if it sits for more than a few days in the garage, gas evaporates out of the fuel bowls in the carb and a splash get it going quickly. I do have a phenolic spacer between intake and carb base that provides some thermal de-coupling and helps with short term evaporation. I'm quite confident in my cars wiring and electrical system as it's in excellent condition, so I don't disconnect that battery when at home unless we might be gone from home for some extended amount of time. From what you describe don't think the charging had anything to do with it starting, it's just that it cranked enough that after the 4-5 tries that it pumped enough fuel to start.

Was this the first start in months? The carb float bowls are empty and it won't start immediately. If you fill the float bowls and it will start quickly.

Maybe a 1/2 ounce of fuel down the carb, set the choke wait about 10-15 seconds and it should fire immediately. It might quit when that runs out but Ive found its really close to running off the fuel supply at that point.

I'm sorry , I forgot. I put in an electric fuel pump just for the long term non-use and because I used to have the bad over heating issue. Thanks for the quick replies !

Like said before.....if it's been sitting, drop an ounce or two of gas down the throat and see if it'll fire up. Long term storage usually means gas has evaporated some and if you have to deal with ethanol laced gas, it's even worse. Even short term storage with ethanol gas means problems.....at least for me.

I don't think it's fuel related. I have an electric fuel pump installed and use it for after long periods of sitting. It has always worked. After storage I install the battery , turn the key and fuel pump on , go under the hood and hand pump it until I see fuel coming out. 1st year since install that I was just another guy cranking and cranking to get it to start. And as I said , it did this last summer a couple times. Battery is about 1 , maybe 2 years old , cables are good. Very weird.
