I found this old Pat Manning Chev ,Marshalltown .Iowa paperwork for my 62 ragtop .I might be able to find the original owner but cannot make out the rego tag.
Can anyone decipher the tag number on this old inspection certificate fro 1977?
Iowa tag looks like 64-EC?-193 the second letter I think is a C ,and same as above word after Dart ....Convert

Do I have this right so far.Car was always in Iowa . I'm third owner. Second owner brought it from and worked @ Pat Manning Chev in Marshalltown Iowa. This second owner died in 2011.

Anyone help here?
thanks

looks to be either 64-ECL 193 or 64-ECC 193. i'm thinking the first one ECL as the lower corners have a sharper bend. Have to tried going on the "net" and typing in the dealer name. If you don't get anywhere, I have an aunt that lived in Marshalltown around that year. I can ask her for what info you may need. Just let me know.

do you have the name of the second owner. My aunt just might know the family name.

Thanks ...could it be a G ?

The car was traded (by 1st owner )to Pat Manning Chevrolet in 1977 . A parts man at this dealer brought it , his name was Wayne Leroy Edwards his wife is Fern. I got a letter with the car from Fern and she told me Wayne purchased it from work for $75 !
So the original owner traded it on a Chev "vomit".

do you think the Iowa DMV would give out the info?

WOW 121106 miles in 15 years and always owned in same town. 1st owner must have driven his *** off !!

The historical records have it delivered to George Thinger Motors .Marshalltown Iowa.

I tried to get previous owner info on my car and the DMV was a little hesitant to do that. That being said, they might since you already have a lot of info for the car. If there is any help that I can offer you, let me know.

Iowa designates counties by number. 64-would be Marshal county, which makes sense if the car came from Marshalltown. ECL is probably an abbreviation of something like Emission Control License and the three digit number is the actual site licensed by the state. in 1977, small town gas stations, car dealers and other locations were licensed to inspect cars and motor cycles. Each site would have their own number. That would not be an uncommon designation for an Iowa facility at that time.

Thanks that's good info which leads me to say I should have posted the full picture and you'll see the station # 64-A-005 at the bottom. So I think the license plate # is the ECL193 . I'm very excited to see where this leads!
What would the 64 be?

Iowa designates counties by number. 64= Marshal county.

Yes, that's the correct format for an Iowa license plate at that time. My plate at that time was 65 (Mills County)- EFF 498. they were white on green if I remember correctly.

Yeah, Looks like ECL from up here by the Canadian border, gotta be the plate number.

Good luck!

You Iowa guys are good at this. The old owner of my 69 RR found me (and his old car) after being separated from it for 40 years. (He's from Iowa too)

Update.

Well Iowa DOT where no help as records where updated to computer in 2005 and all previous records tossed! Do ya believe that?

So I emailed the PO son to try and get any more info....he tells me his dad brought the car from his work (Chev dealer) for $75 !.... Must have been more to that deal ;)
Anyways he asks his old mum and she remembers her husband told her the car was traded (1977)by a Armor Adams , he was a band teacher at B.R. Miller Jr. High School in Marshalltown, Iowa.
Can't find anything on the net so I'm gonna ring this school to see if any relatives are around. After all how many guys are named ARMOR & live in marshalltown!
Do you know anyone roadrunnerman?
Thanks to all for their eyes :)

Got a couple names for you. My aunt went to school with a Leslie Edwards (possibly sister) who married a Merle Brewster they lived around a small town called Albion, Iowa. Don't know if this helps, but it gives you a couple more names.
