Back in the Day, I knew a few guys with power that had success with 8 3/4's, all used good axles & I'm pretty sure they all had spools. Other guys went to 9" Fords. I may be really dumb but I still feel a Dana 60, even though heavier will hold up to the abuse I give it. I'm pretty sure my Satellite is due for a spool. The limited street driving should not be a problem.

After looking around, this is the direction I'm going to go. I only drive on the street for a little tuning and hanging out at local gatherings.
For a spooled D60, Moser wants $2240 and they're only a 62 mile drive from the house.

Pretty sure moser has a 48hour turn around time on any rearend ordered. That’s nice if You’re in a rush.

I sent my Coronet to a rear end shop in Fresno. They did a complete turnkey deal for $3000. Dana 60 with all Moser Parts, 4.30 ring and pinion, axles, spool, etc. It wasn't cheap but I never have to look back and worry about breaking it.
I sold my complete 8 3/4 rear end complete with housing, etc. It had Moser Axles and 4.30 Detroit Locker. I sold it for $1000 (before I broke it, lol) so the real cost of my Dana setup was $2000.

FYI, in 1974 I bought my my '65 Coronet 426 Street Wedge 4 SPD. Complete with 2 broken 4 spd's, & 1 good one, and a broken 8 3/4. Was 12.70ish car. Put a 727 in it right away. Later found right axle had a significant twist in the splines. My aftermarket Dana axles never twisted, even with double the power. I ran thousands of runs 11.20 to 10.50 with my Coronet. I am a Dana 60 believer.

Ended up being $2374 out the the door. A little clean up, paint the housing and she'll be ready to install.

Agree on the dana 60. Why not a real Detroit locker instead of the spool if street driven/ I have a 60 w/ the locker, has worked very well, and is streetable. Still have to watch it in the rain tho. No traction so far, need bigger tires and some front end lift , and maybe a little more timing--------

I have used Royal Purple 75W-140 in the 8 3/4 the last 15 or so years.

I would use some plain dino oil to break the gears in, run it a while and change to the good stuff.

I just broke in a set of 4.10 gears on my 60, I always put magnets on the drain plugs of my vehicles, there was a fair amount on the magnet.

It sounds like you have gotten great service from the royal purple, why change?
Otoh, I had a good friend who owned a one-man differential shop, specializing in 9inch, but worked on everything. He did the locker in my 8 3/4, and a spool in my 9in.
He would warrantee anything with synthetic gear lube for six seconds/ six inches, whichever came first.
He recommended Torco, the heaviest you can find. (Southern California hot weather).
If you want to stick with synthetic, I think 65fury440's plan is a good one.

When you buy a s60 frome Strange, they use 85/140 non synthetic Lucas, that tells me all I need to know.

Put the car on a scale a couple days ago, 3860# with driver and 5 gallons of fuel. The Dana 60 added 60# to the car, but I've lost 22# since the first of the year ... lol

I am cheap also. Well started out that way. I narrowed an old 1 ton truck rear axle for free. I ordered all new everything from Strange. Housing ends, 4:10 pro gear, L.W. Spool, gun drilled 40 spline ultra l.w. axles, 5/8" stud kit, pro lite brake kit (smaller mounts to clear beadlocks, support cover and installation kit. I have about $2200.00 in it now.

Yeah I broke one and twisted 2 8 3/4 axles before I put my Dana in. Busted my 4.30 street gears last year. Have 4.10 pro gears now. So far so good. 10 teens in a 4100 pound car.
