New guy to this forum, first question

i looked up that cam and it's similar to or may be a repop of the 256/260 361/383 2bbl cam. i'd recommend an elgin e-988-p or a howards 720141-12. these two cams are similar and are a step above a stock magnum cam, two steps above whats in the engine, but won't need any converter or gear change (keep the 3.23). they also will be compatiable with the compression ratio. i wouldn't go anymore than a comp cams 280/.480. all these cams will need a spring change and retainer to seal clearance checked. carbs a little small but will work fine for a torque engine.

Nice car and nice engine! Welcome!

I am not an expert engine builder, so I will let those with more expertise speak to specific engine specs.

I will say this. One of the most overlooked "performance gains" is simple tuning. A great many cars out there could significantly increase their power and "kick in the pants" by a well experienced and capable tuner. You say your cars runs OK, but really dialing in timing, advance, carb, etc. can make a huge difference.

So it all depends on your dollars and what you want to do. A cam replacement is not too bad, so this might be something that could be on your list given that it seems to be on the small side. Either way, making sure the car is really tuned well can provide amazing results...

Glad to see a guy under 30 with some interest in a car instead of a telephone!
Name the forum you had trouble with. I'm due to get banned from a forum any day now so I might as well pick a fight to get things moving forward...:headbang:

thanks guys for the replies

What do you think of the hughes whiplash cam with new lifters and springs? made for lower compression motors like mine?
Im leaning that way unless you think the comp cams would work better? Ive read alot of good things on the hughes

and i wont say what forum i was on, Not that they were rude, its just i got the impression that they were upset with me not knowing the "ins and outs" of building a motor

nice guys in general, but i like this forum alot more already!

Had a whiplash in an engine much like the one you've built in a 67 Satellite. I liked it a lot...if you haven't went to the "customer ride" link on the Hughes site I suggest you do. If you google YouTube Whiplash cam there are several video's. Also several members of this forum have used the cam....if you go to the engine section and search Whiplash you'll find several threads.

can i ask if you ran it with manifolds or headers?
any issues with the brakes as far as vacuum?

Don't get stuck with the idea of one cam. Making a motor run is a package deal, meaning all the parts and pieces need to work together. That gives you the results you want. That Hugh's cam would need the right compression range, fuel, so on.

Low compression motor? A motor is only what parts you feed it. Said you have flat top pistons? That's a go for today's gas. Compression value can set, going by the thickness of the head gaskets...up or down.

No 'pro' on the cam stuff here, but many of the guys here are top notch on them. They'll tell you true! You just need to know the cam is only part of the 'package' that makes it go.

Yup, good to see a youngster willing to ask dumb questions. (No such thing!!!)

Hi Stegs welcome. I was in your shoes just 18 months ago and recieved a great deal of support form the guys here.
My 73 RR has a low compression 440 engine in it and I decided to wait on the full rebuild with the idea of hopefully getting to it later if required. (The engine was low mileage and had great compression).
Long story short I bought parts that I should be able to re-use later if needed.
I added 440 source Stealth Heads with Comp cams ultra pro magnum roller rocker setup. Custom ground cam, TTI headers and a full 2 1/2 exhaust system. The transmission was beefed up with a stall convertor. I already had 355 gears so the combination works well. I also needed a new holley carb as there isn't much adjustability in my original Carter AFB.
Surprisingly when it got it on the dyno the 440 was starving for fuel so I added a new fuel pump including tank and dual fuel lines.
Long story short it has around 370 HP and 325 ft-lbs of torque and that was before we changed the jets and squirters in the carb so basically around 400 HP.
It made a huge difference performance wise as now it launches of the line and pulls well through the entire run.
I will get it to the track this summer as I would like to know what it really can do with a budget rebuild.
Good luck with your's.

I think what i decided was this:

Eddy E street heads with 75CC chambers, that should bump my compression somewhere between 9.5 and 10. Which is good, i can still run 93 pump gas

The nice part about this is, my manifolds will bolt up, and i can reuse my cam for temp also

Then i can still enjoy the car, when i have the money, get headers, enjoy the car......save up money, new cam, enjoy the car

This way the car isnt out of commission for along period of time and i can enjoy it as i save up for the next mod

eventually the 440 will have e street heads with 75 cc chambers
lunati 268/276 cam
TTI headers
It has a holley 750 carb now and a eddy intake (not rpm, but thats ok for now)

This combo will also be brake friendly with plenty of vacuum. It wont be a huge HP motor, but it will make enough to put a smile on my face. A good cruiser that is very streetable, but should be fun for a few runs down the 1/4 mile

I was told with proper tuning that combo should be in the 450 plus when all said and done. I dont need that much honestly, but its nice to know i can go that way if i want

My goal is before i add alot of power, to upgrade brakes and suspension.

My goal is to give the car a little boost in performance, it runs strong but seems lazy off the line....30mph + it pulls very very well

what do you guys think? I figure this isnt cheap, but i think it beats pulling the motor again, and throwing away most of the 1 year old parts i bought last summer

I will get the performance I want, reuse parts so i can enjoy the car while saving up

I think its the best route for me....1 step at a time....
