New here and to mopar

Hey,

1st post here. I am also brand new (ignorant) to Mopar stuff. I just got a 64 Polara 4dr. The guy (clueless about cars) told me he thought it had a 383 big block. I got it home and took the breather off to find a 1 barrel carb. I am kinda thinkin that may be he was wrong. Can someone help me by giving me some direction on how to go about identifying this engine? Thanks in advance, and I will try to keep dumb questions down to a minimum.

Welcome. First, ALL Mopar big blocks have the distributor in the front. If it ain't in the front, then it ain't a 383 (or any other big block). Being a 64 it is probably a "poly" 318 and that is a 2V and not a 1V carb. Bet the valve covers are sort of "scalloped" on the lower edge, and it has evenly spaced exhaust ports as opposed to the two in the center being next to each other

Thanks guys. Hey 69 runner... You are so right. Looks like what I have is indeed a 318 and it is indeed a 2 barrel. Everything else you said was right on as well. Is it just me or does that 318 look a little bigger than the small blocks in Chevys and Fords? May be it was just the huge air con compressor or something, but It sure seemed big looking.

Oh here's a cool Mopar fact for you then, the 318 is (rather was) the longest lived V8 is company history. The engine was pushing anything from a Polara such as yours and powered Chargers, Coronets and many other A, B, C and E bodies well up into the 1970s until fuel injection replaced the faithful Carter carb, and went into Dakota pickups and Durango SUVs until Dr. Z and the damn Germans killed it.

Not just you. Those Polys look much bigger than they really are. Some call them "wide blocks", but they aren't any wider than a "LA" 318. It's an odd duck for sure, but a GREAT motor.
