New Points not running right ! Need Help!!

I changed the points and condenser on my 383 RoadRunner with nos Accell. Set them on 19 and now I have a big miss and popping in it when I crank it up. What could I be missing on this? Got to get it going got a show about 100 miles away this weekend. I have changed a lot of points and never had this problem. Let me know what any of you think about this. Thanks in advance Ronnie

There is a lot of things

Accell pts have a stronger spring so it will show a bad bushing sooner
the condenser could be bad
the pts could be miss aligned
if your wires are old one could have cracked well working on it

also check with a dwell meter see if it is floating

It is a new dist. so all bushings and wiring good. I'm going to reset them in awhile. I'm going to change the condenser before I try it again. Ronnie

You can re-install the old parts to see if it goes away. This would at least tell you if its the new parts or possibly something else?

may I make a suggestion? I got tired of fiddling with points so I installed the ignitor by pertronix, goes in where points are cost less than 100 bucks and only has the 2 wires that go to the coil. works great in my challenger,boat,and 8n ford tractor. and always carry points just in case you can install them back in without removing distributor. all tho I haven't had any failures.

Well I got the car out to go gas it up, not good. It still has a miss in it so I'm back to where I started. I'm going to pick up new points this afternoon and put them in the car in the morning. I have never had this much heck out of putting new points in a car. I hope I can get it fixed in the morning. If not there may be a 70 RoadRunner for sale. Ronnie

When you pull the dist. cap is the condenser too hot to touch, if so you need a new one? Did you use the grease on the dist. shaft to keep the plastic part of the points lubricated? The Accell points do have a stronger spring on them, this is a good thing and keeps the points from floating. I would try setting your point gap at 17 and see how that works for you and make sure your screws are tight, Get your distributer timing set right with vacuum unhooked and plugged if you have a vacuum advance. If you have a vacuum advance, try driving the car without it hooked up and plugged and see how that does. Check your motor for vacuum leaks, you might be surprised at what you find or don't find. I assume firing order is right, wiring is good and coil is ok. Start with the easy things first and eliminate them as you go. Do you know anyone with a distributer machine? They could diagnose and set up your distributer perfectly. Check rotor and cap to be double sure there are no invisible cracks. Last thing I have for you is to park in a absolutely dark garage, open the hood and see if you have a fireworks display. Good Luck Ronnie



Not trying to make anyone look dumb, but you are setting your points on the high point of the distributer cam?

I done had it dialed in and timing set. Car has been running good, just drove it about 150 miles Sat. and it started to get a miss on the way home. Checked the points and they were burnt pretty good so I changed them and have had heck since then. The new points I put in it look like they are running to close to the rotor, would they short on that? I looked at the ones I took out and another set I have and the standoff are taller on both of them. It is greased and the condenser has been changed too. And I am setting them on the high points.
