Yes, start with ignition timing. Its not hard to diagnose yourself. Get a decent timing light, and mark TDC on your damper with white nail polish. And mark the 10 degree line on your timing cover. Set initial at 10 advance with vac line un hooked. Then gradually advance the timing by rotating the dist clockwise until it idles the fastest, then back it off slightly. If it pings under load, back it off some more. If you don't understand the procedure, you can ask us or look it up online.
