question for you guys I just started a 1965 383 I picked up.
started it runs great but have a noise coming from the other side of the timing cover.
il get in to it tomorrow but was wondering if you have any ideas?
is there retaining bolt for camshaft end play I know it was a single bolt camshaft.

Is it a metal on metal grinding noise?

Check the length of the 6 bolts used to hold the crankshaft pulley onto the vibration dampner. If they are a little too long, they will hit the lip of the timing cover where the crank seal is. Just a shot in the dark.

An even darker shot is, the oil slinger was installed backwards and is being ground up by the timing chain. :sad2:

Just saw an example of this on the forum here recently.

Could also be that 1 bolt in the cam is loose.

Look forward to hearing the result of your exploration

Hopefully this is not what you have going on as mine was installed correctly and still did the same thing of grinding it. This also was done on a 65 383 motor with a double roller timing chain. New replacement motor is going back in the project this week...

Glad to hear that was the problem, its an easy one to fix and doesn't cost much. :headbang: I've seen this happen more than once, usually when someone replaces the 6 factory 5/16" bolts with some new ones from the hardware store. Hardware store bolts are a little bit longer than the factory ones.

Mopars & Missiles: Good call! Don't you just love it when you nail a solution to a problem? Good for you...

what I did was buy a pulley off ebay and was supplied the hardware it was just of a few thousands off.Just a washer took care of it.

Good call. I didn't take into account that those bolt holes are actually tapped all the way through from the front to the back. So a longer bolt will cause just what actually occurred...KUDOS there MOPAR and MISSILES
