Roll Call. Who's all going?

I'll be there but not sure if I'll have the car. I had some epoxy come out of the intake port while it was on the Dyno so that has put me about 3 weeks behind.
I have the transmission apart on the bench and found the thrust washer between the front clutch and the rear clutch really worn. The old girl is fighting me every step of the way. :(
IF... everything goes together this week I may be able to get it there on Sunday.

Don't rush it Kevin. They'll be more races.

Skiped the Dave Duell Classic thinking it was going to be rained out, mistake. Then I was going to try Columbus Chrysler Power Classic. Stupidly I topped of my diesel with gasoline. Fortunately it was only 4 miles from home. By the time it was all repaired it was raining in Columbus. So hopefully weather will be good enough to try this coming weekend.

I'll be there. I can't get out of work on Friday, so it will be around 8pm Friday night by the time I get there. I'm looking forward to it...I've never been to Quaker.

Hope to see you guys there. I'll be there Sunday for sure with or with out the car.

Chris, I agree, I can't take any short cuts. I've come this far.

Here are the thrust washers. Like a dummy I didn't check the input shaft play before I took it apart. (I didn't know there was any issues with the trans.) I was just going to swap out the drum and put it back together 40 passes on this this Trans. I do the transmission so I'm not sure what the guy did. Any ideas on what would cause this?

The upper picture looks like it has wear on the edge. Is that correct? If so I'd be looking at interference where it sets against the annulus gear. Being that is a 5 pin planet it is not the factory original part. The 2nd pic isnt that abnomal either. It looks like that thrust washer was actually behind the stator support previously and got switched, same part. The 3rd pic is normal. There is only thin babbit on top of the copper. Never seen a unblueprinted 727 that didn't have enough end play. How does the reaction shaft/pump thrust washer look?

Hi Doug,

The fiber in the pan was from the fiber washer between the two drums which is shown in the second picture. The wear is really bad I know the picture doesn't show that.
The first washer is only worn on the out side edge. The 5 pinion planetary was purchased from A&A in 2011 so it isn't that old. I can feel a little ridge on it.. I'm just trying to figure out where it come from.
With this all being said the fluid looked great red as can be with no metal in it... and that is with an aluminum drum.
The fiber washer on the reaction shaft looks mint. no wear at all.

Thanks

What overall endplay did you have? Id run a stone over the thrust washer surface of the planet to make sure it doesn't have a high spot. The 5 pin thust washer should be the same outer diameter as a 3 or 4 pin. Take a good look at the front drum surface for burrs as well. I'm assuming it wore the phenolic resin washer on the drum side? Call Rick at A&A, he would know better than anyone. You don't suppose the internal splines on the turbine side of the converter could be buggered up forcing the input shaft rearward? I run an A&A aluminum drum as well, no such issue. It has very little endplay, .010"-.015".

Well Im gonna be forced to miss this weekend. Monday evening I went to unload the car and noticed water on the floor of the trailer...upon some inspection I found that the block is cracked just above the drain pipe plug drivers side of the block and goes towards the core plug probably 2 inches long. I have enough parts to build another short block but I dont have enough time to make it this weekend.

Ok, tell me if I'm doing this right or not. checking end play I would put the indicator on the input shaft and them push on the output shaft while pulling on the input.... trying to take up any slack in the assy. doing it that way I'm getting .025
How are you checking end play?
Yes it's the resin washer between the clutch's. Now I mic'ed the old washer and it was about .080, so I put the thin one from the A&A thrust washer kit.
Thanks again Doug.
By the way, what 2nd gear band lever are you using, 4.2?

That really sux Al. I'll bet you wanted to throw up.

Can you get it welded?

That is how I do it. I've used 5.0 and 4.2. Now it's down to a 3.8. My theory is the lighter the rotating assembly is the less ratio it needs. Mine has an aluminum drum and a milled sun shell.

Looks like we'll be there around 5:30 tomorrow.

Yes I think it can be welded and repaired. Ill have the other engine in by Monday (I hope...lol). My reaction was more of disbelief than anything..lol. It's racing stuff happens.

Good deal! I'll be out Sunday weather permitting, but the car won't be ready...
It is what it is. Too much to do and not enough time to get it done. I'm hoping to have it fired up by Monday so I can go testing next weekend, then be ready for the Curt George Race in June.

I got the Trans pretty much done tonight. (thanks for your input, it was a big help!)

Have a Safe Trip!

At least you'll be up and running with in a week... Your right it's a racing thing BUT it's still a project that was unexpected.
You going to Pittsburgh for the Curt George race and Norwalk?

Ran the gamblers last night. Car was all over the map. Lights were decent. 3rd rd they cut it to 1/8 because of dew. .023 light, shut it down about 200 ft out, very loose. Try again today.

Unbelievable only 2 cars showed up for N/SS. But there had to be a winner so it might as well be me. I'll take it. My last 8 races here, 4 wins, 3 R/U, 1 1/4 final. Tomorrow is another race, we'll see.
Doug

My wife and I will be out to watch tomorrow. That's a shame only 2 cars. That sucks.
