can someone tell me the process for checking the numbers on a car , I'm interested in a car that is supposed to b numbers matching but don't know how to prove this.. its a 68 roadrunner.. thanks!
The last 8 of the VIN# should be found on the block, drivers side towards the top of the rear of the block. If it is an Automatic, there should be the same eight conforming numbers on the trans top lip, same location. Then, the number on the radiator support and drip rail driver side rear, about half way down the length of the trunk lid will be found on the Inner fender tag, bottom right.
Front radiator support has the last of the vin #'s stamped there as well as the rear drivers side trunk rail under the weather striping, for your motor it depends on the motor, trans is stamped on the passenger side just above the pan rail on a flat section. motor if 383 could be stand rear near the top by bell housing on the block or on the passenger side near a freeze plug I think,
keep in mind the 1968' didn't have the VIN# on the body,(on the Dash Only) but did so starting in 1969,as The Sequential order number was no longer used on the body.
Numbers matching is exactly what it sounds like the numbers on the car match... Unfortunately until January of 1968 many motors were not stamped and then it was not mandated by law for another year. If it has a fender tag for 68 you would find the SO number in a few places on the body. For a 1968 Road runner, not a hemi, numbers matching is not really all that much in value. I hear all the time people asking how much a numbers matching car is worth, and it is worth exactly what a ready willing and able buyer is willing to pay. The test here is at what point will the seller sell you the car and is that number a number your willing to pay. Investment quality cars are rare to come up on craigslist as most sellers know what they have. In this case I think the seller knows exactly what they have and are looking for a victim... Don't be that victim.... Good luck..
Other than making sure it's the correct model/engine-combo....I wouldn't personally care too much. The market is in the crapper, and the chances of anything other than a hemi-car or factory racecar being an investment, is almost nil and getting worse.
As the owner of a 1968 Roadrunner, it may have a vin stamped and it may not. Biggest thing to check is a possible Fender tag #, the # on the side of transmission, and the # by bellhousing on block. The trans and engine will both be dated before the car slightly. The trans and engine should still match each other even if it's not a vin.
With 1968 being a transition year, a lot of the cars do not have vin stamping throughout like 69 and above. And there's a lot of differences out there for these model years which doesn't make it easy without broadcast sheet and documentation.
