Bought the oil pan and pickup tube from 440 Source back in April. Finally ready to install and the pickup hits the pan and won't let it bolt up where it belongs. So I start backtracking what I ordered and what I received and it looks like they sent me the wrong pan. Guess who's getting a call tomorrow...

Summit has the 6 qt. 402 pan for 94 bucks.......just incase ya change your mind about that 4 qt. pan.

The thing is that I wanted the 121-1001 pan and they sent me the stock pan. Not much difference until you look at them side by side. It's the bare metal one, third pic from the top, that I wanted.
Oh well, guess I'll try again. So close, yet so far. Might have a stock pan for sale...

Well I called 440 Source today, put me on hold for about five minutes then took my name and # said their Tec guy would call me back... :thatswck:

Meanwhile thought I would rob the timing chain cover from the discarded 413 that I have, clean it up and paint. I'm thinking the crank had a little bit of end play in it.

Talked to their Tec guy today. Apparently the picture for their 121-1001 pan isn't what you get anymore. Haven't had that style pan in a long time. You actually get the one like I received and painted orange. I replied that you should have the picture replaced with the correct pan that you are selling, not something that doesn't exist anymore.

The problem is that their pick up tube supplier, purposely makes the tubes on the long side because of the inconsistencies in the location of where the tube threads into the block. Never knew there was such a issue with the threaded hole location?

Anyway, I was told to cut the tube to the correct lenth and weld it back together. So I'm going to give that a try first as long as it doesn't end up raising the distance from the bottom of the pan too much.

Kind of like asking for a plain cheese burger, you never know what you're going to get now days.

BTW I was offered the opportunity to return the pan for a refund...

Your talking about the 440source stuff?

Yep. I like their products, great prices. Just that I had to pick this one particular item that they sell, that isn't what they show it is. The Tec also told me to make sure that what I order from Summit is what they say it is. They're using generic pictures in their adds too.

I started a thread back in April just to see what is available now days and a couple of replies talked about this very pan. Go figure...

And a real good thread,

http://www.forbbodiesonly.com/moparforum/showthread.php?75575-Oil-pan-suggestion

Thought I was getting something similar to the P5007807 pan mentioned in post #18 in the last thread. Modified 971.

Here is the recipe for the 6 qt. 70-71 pan with a 4.25" stroke and 2.200" rods.

Stock windage tray used with the pick up the Summit or 440 source pickup spec'd for a 5" sump. Lots of options out there and hopefully you don't end up with a pile of windage trays, pickup tubes, and oil pans like I did lol. Pretty much no matter what you do there will be some light fabrication to complete. I'd tack the tube where you want it and have somebody TIG weld it back in once piece.

Thanks Jeremiah. That's just what I plan on doing except for the welding. Been welding all my life. Piece of cake!

Do your math, make your cut, just tack it to make sure you're there, then clamp your tubing in a piece of angle iron to keep her true. Don't forget to clean the inside from slag (scale).

This is a stock pan, why am I doing all this? Times have changed. :gah:

Any curved pickup that is out there that looks like stock is not stock!!! I lived through this nightmare already. The pick up has to be cut like Jeremiah did. The other option is to cut the tube on the vertical section just before the pickup, cut to length, thread the tube and use a brass fitting to secure the two together. The pick ups that are out there right now are or were designed to go with a MP Performance pan. You can do a search and find people talking about different wall thicknesses and part #'s but none of them will fit a stock 402 pan. I also used 2 felpro high end thick gaskets with a windage tray that added some depth but it still had to be cut.

Here's what I did after work today.
It's hard to caption each pic so here's the low down.

1. The pan set back 3/4" from where it belonged so lets cut that much off of the tube where it affects the length not the height.

2. Scribe two lines on either side where you're going to cut so you can line things back up.

3. Tack the pieces back together leaving a small gap for penetration when welded.

4. I placed a small LED magnetic flash light inside the pan and mounted the pan to the block. Looks good! Now transfer some measurements from the pan to the block. 5" deep pan. I'm looking for 3/8" from the pick up to the bottom. Looks pretty close so lets weld.

5. Cleaned up the weld. Flared over the area that was welded for extra strength. Now lets install. I used a small amount of lock- tite to keep it from moving in the future.

6. It's all tight and it measures out great. The straight edge across the block doubles as a gasket thickness reference too. Had to tweak it about 1/8" closer to the pan after it was tight. Not too shabby!

7. Note to self: Leaving your auto darkening welding helmet in the cabinet for a long period of time will be a enlightening experience!

Ok, finally the day has arrived. Engine and trans is in along with the pan results.

In the first post you see what pan I bought from 440 Source. Part # 121-1001

I'm going to notch the K frame for a little more clearance. The center link clearance looks good. Turned the wheel from one side to the other with no problems. Some say that their link raises and contacts the pan when turning.

Here is the measurement to the center of the notch to the idler arm nut, so it can be cut before installing the engine.

I see that they still haven't changed the picture of the pan in their add. If anyone orders this pan and it's identical to their picture, with the notched front corner, you won't need to notch the K frame. Let me know if you receive one like their picture.

By the way, I'm not sure what capacity this pan is advertised but I put five quarts in it, primed the engine with a oil pump priming rod. (filling a empty filter) and had to add another quart. So that's six including the filter.

Great Pics for pre-notching. I see no windage tray. That would obviously tighten up steering clearance. This is where I pucker up, untill engine in.....and steering hooked up.
