Oil Pressure Sending Unit Install on 440

The PO on my 71 GTX clone replaced the gauge type oil pressure sender with an oil line type aftermarket gauge. I want to go back to using the original type sender, but it seems like the sending unit has too big a diameter to screw into the existing sending unit hole. It hits the rear edge of the block and won't line up. Picked up the sending unit at Advance Auto, but it showed it correct for big block Mopar and the unit looks like both of mine on my 66 and 67 Chargers (361/383). Anyone else run into this problem?

I cant remember BUT...I think there are 2 different types
Depending on years.
Be advised, they both are NPT thread...

I assume you are talking about the bell shaped switch for an oil gauge , not idiot light. You can go to your local hardware store and buy a 45 degree offset adapter in the correct pipe thread. That should give you plenty of room.

I don't trust Part Store Key Strokers. I do my research first and then tell them what I NEED. You could use an extended pipe fitting to clear the block.

You are trying to install it on passenger side of block? If you have the large can as shown above mine fits fine with no extensions.

Same here, I go in armed w/ part numbers and how many they have on hand, back 14 years ago I worked at the 'zone while I was in college, no surprise on how many workers treated the computer as 100% gospel

What ? No catalog racks and catalogs ? What happened in my absence ?

I have the fatter type sender. Just checked it against an old OE sender I kept for some reason and its the same diameter. I am mounting it on the passenger side and it doesn't clear the block, so I went to Lowes and got a pipe extension that should raise it enough to clear the block. Shall try to install it again tomorrow. Just strange it doesn't clear the block as it sits now.....

only catalogs we had were for VDP (vendor direct parts) ordering, at the time half of autozone's board members were also members of fedex's board, so shipping was free, so at times it was cheaper to order parts through AZ than summit/jegs, plus they showed up in 2 days :headbang:


and as for the oil pressure sending unit, there's one for gauge (the fat one) and one for a dummy light, they both should have no issues with hitting anything :dontknow:

yes, all the senders mount on the drivers side oil hole..there are 2 back there..the passenger side is not used in a stock application

How the hell do you get the big can type on or off, it's impossible to get a wrench in there as we find on my friends car

if i remember, it uses a 1/2 or 9/16 wrench, under that big bell, you can use a wrench

I'm trying to replace mine with a digital sender, I tried using a 9/16 crow foot wrench,not enough room for wrench to turn? Any options

I was able to remove by bending bell part off, then 9/16 stud exposed, used deep socket to remove. New digital unit takes a 11/16. Used a crow foot, I real PIA. Easier to do with engine out of car!!!!!

Hey, Mark, the guys are right. The bell type sender is usually on the driver's side. Just swap out the plug, from the opposite side. It's close, but should slip right in. I've always used a short open end wrench, to tighten them down.
