I am installing an engine this weekend and has been sitting for sometime. It is free but I would like to prime the system before starting. I know that this has been discussed before and sorry for the new thread. I know counter clockwise with a good drill but am I just turning where the dist slot goes about 3 inches down in the block? If so does it have to go back right where it was? Sorry have never did this before and trying to save the engine from a dry start. Thanks Jim

On my big block,I took out the oil pump drive shaft. then I took an old oil pump drive shaft and ground all the teeth off of the gear at the top of the shaft so it will only turn the oil pump when installed. Took an old distributor without the guts and attached it to my drill.had a gauge hooked up and that's it,except that if it's a big block, the oiling to the top end is timed by the cam, so I had to slowly rotate the engine at the balancer until I saw oil coming out of the rockers.

Are you going to take off the manifold and valley pan? If you are you can buy this rod for priming.

If not find an old distributor and saw off the shaft, bolt on or weld on an extension and get to priming :)

The rotation is counter clock wise, you want to turn the shaft that turns the oil pump.

Hello. To answer your question. NO YOUR NOT TURNING THE SLOT IN THE DISTRIBUTOR. YOUR TURNING THE PUMP WAY DOWN IN. IT IS A 5/16 FEMALE HEX THAT GOES DOWN IN YOUR OIL PUMP. I JUST GOT A 5/16 HEX STOCK AND INSERTED IT IN MY DRILL. IT NEEDS TO BE 20 INCHES OR SO TO GET DOWN IN THERE. Check out my thread NO OIL PRESSURE. There is a lot of good talk on this. I filled my oil pump with 90 weight oil to get a prime on the pump ( some people use vasoline but 90 weight oil just mixes in withe rest and its only a little bit in the pump.

Thanks guys I thought I was wrong with my thinking. Forgot to let you know it is a 383 sorry about that. I will check out that post.

Regular oil should be all ya need to get a pump pumping....
