old dirt bike memories

I know I have a pic of the actual bike in a box somewhere ......

well, this was a mind blower......... the other night i was taking apart my snap-on tool box that i've owned since the late 80's. the drawers were getting hard to open so i took them out to clean/lubricate them........ laying in the bottom of the box was the picture i was referring to, not sure how long its been there...... i know i used to keep the top drawer of the bottom box for personal items and photos, guess it got caught up in the back of the drawer and fell behind.

anyway, this was my bike..... check out the size of the rear sprocket.... kinda like a 4.88 gear! ....... this bike climbed hills like no other!

I hear ya!!! Anytime we rode our bikes outside of the yard Dad made it a rule that we always wore a helmet though. Inside the confines of the property it was another story. Times were different back then. We actually played outside, rode on the front buddy seat without seat belts, slept on the package tray on long road trips etc.
Bullying existed, but they always got their medicine in the end. If you had a problem with another kid you settled it at the bus stop or on the play ground. ( Not by doing a drive by on their house. ) Parents encouraged kids to go outside and play, ride bikes (without helmets) and people smoked in restaurants and cars. Not as many people were obese as today. Racing was fun and sex was safe.

Somehow we humans all survived in spite of our "unsafe" actions.

when and where I grew up, every kid had a serious dirt bike........I'm talking mid to late 70's........ I remember the Honda CR's and Yamaha YZ's were new to the scene...... the Suzuki RM's and Kawasaki KX's were barely established but coming on hard........ Euro bikes were the thing, I had a friend with a Bultaco and another friend with a Husqvarna....... there was a family who raced Ossa's......

now guys collect/restore old dirtbikes ......... who knew? ...... we used to beat 'em to death at the local gravel pits......... learned alot about wrenching and tools ...... way cooler than video games imo

I worked snack bar at a skating rink and saved enough to buy a used 76 Maico 250, must have been in 1979..... I was 14......... bike was way too big for me but I grew into it, lucky I didn't get seriously hurt..... it was a bad mo-fo......... this pic i found on google is pretty much exact (other than being clean), I know I have a pic of the actual bike in a box somewhere ......

I used to ride all the time when I was a kid. Me and my Brother. This was my 79 KX80 (and my big sister's duster).

KX500 I bought new in 1989

1975, Mine was a 250 Bull Alpina, rest of our trail riders in no order. 250 Honda Elsinor, 125 Rickman then later a 350 Bull, 3 other 250 Yamaha KZ Cats, 450 single 4 stroke Yamaha (broke his ankle starting it), Penton 6 day. Rode the river trail every weekend, no helmets, no suits, dead of winter after 1/2 hour you were down to a shirt all the coats strapped to bars. Everybody had a tool box with 3-4 plugs, choke it out, change plug. All of us were in great shape then. Now we’re all (70 and up still kicking) fat overweight pigs in our twilight years. But oh the memories.
Some of the sizes might be off been a long time. my first ‘car’ 1967 Honda 305 Super Hawk rode it to school most every day, met my wife of 50 years in April on it. All the buddies in school had Honda’s except Allen he had to buy the killer, Suki X6 Hustler. Bought a 79 Shovel in 05 couldn’t stand wearing a helmet, sold it

I don't know how I missed this thread. Also growing up in NJ, I got my first bike, a 1983 CR 80 in 1984. Then a 1985 YZ 125 in 1986. I progressed all the way to a CR 500 in 1989. That scared the sh!t outta me more times than I can remember.
Mopars took the place of 2 cycle dirtbikes, but I still wish to this day that I could ride again. At almost 50, I know better, but I still miss it.

Kawa 500 was the last dirt bike I had when I was in my 40's and I found out I didn't like getting beat up anymore riding dirt... I called it the "death" machine, cause if you didn't let up on the throttle quick enough while riding trails, you were going WAY too fast before the next turn, by the LARGE tree... Scary fast....

I have not gotten into restoring old ones but still ride new ones. I was a Kawasaki kid back then... these days KTM and exploring the southwest... Ophir Pass Colorado.

I’m gonna bust up this ATV Park on the way to Chrysler’s at Carlisle and on the way back home. I’ll ride my YZ250 and my GF will ride a Pink Polaris 90cc. Both are 2 strokes. Brap Brap

I grew up on bikes, had everything but a Suzuki but mostly had Kawasaki KX250's. Gave it up years ago then turned around and bought this beauty last year, it's hard to be without one for me, I love it! I could have bought a 450 4 stroke but I'm a die hard 2 stroke fan.

Getting a bulldozer out here this spring to overhaul my old practice track... Make it more forgiving lol.
