overcharging -17 volts

Sounds like the brush holder broke or melted and is grounding the brush at the alternator. If it is under warranty, just replace the alternator, else check the brush holder, and replace if needed.

this IS with the new alternator

Im going to highjack this thread since a similar problem occured for me today with my 64 Polara.

When i started the car the voltage was a steady 14 ish on Idle, and then after a little while the voltage went up to 18V. And also the taillights and dash lights went dark. All the fuses are okay as well as the bulbs, but it has to be related.

I Will follow the tips in this thread locating the charging problem, but has anyone had this same problem where the lights die att the same time?

I followed this thread because I had 17 volts coming out of the Alt. also. I pretty much checked all the wiring and found the blue wire on the field had come out of the connector. Soldered to the connector and putting out the right voltage now. Of course I tried VR and alt. and no help. That's the bad part about crimping wires into connectors. I'll try and solder wires into connectors from now on.

Odmark your voltage regulator points are probably stuck together on a '64.. give the black box a hit! As for the '70 dual field alternator... I covered that, same as tonyst is here, last week. 18volts at 3500rpm and charging 40 amps. Lights on, limp home, fix and go cruise.
