PAGING RUSTY...Got Some Rust for ya to Examine for Me

First thing I might think about is goin to Wally world and pickin up a BIG plastic tub and soak it in Vinegar and lemon juice... or Evapo rust..... I think vinegar would be cheaper. Then you might get a better idea of the pitts.

Meep will know, I bet, but at trivalley machine, we had cores like this we would build all the time. Put it in a 50 gallon drum of muratic acid and water, leave it for a couple days. Jet clean it, wire wheel it. Come out looking really nice. Some of the galleys are best hit with rifle brushes....

Alum Oxide is fantastic stuff -- for massive rust removal massively fast. I use is very sparingly. The worst stuff I get in have the greatest need for it, like our cars; ie old MOPARS, BUT...the most I'll use is maybe 5% total mixture of my media is AO.

Before even dealing with the rust, take it a shop and have those cylinders sonic checked for thickness if they are good than clean it up otherwise your just going to have a giant heat sink that overheats constantly, and in 6 months from now we will all be posting on a thread about how to keep that thing cool! lol

Also brake fluid cleans very well

Thanks all for the replies back. Like I initially stated it was a FREE block so really I am not out anything but the time to get it. I am kinda spoiled with my 2 383 builds being in better condition block wise than this one. So it now appears that a small investment to see if it is worth a complete job is worth it. If I am only out a 100.00 or so to at least get it checked out then it is worth it to me. Sonic checking is a definite check that I will be making first and then get it baked/soaked so that a complete examination of the metallurgy can be done and then based upon that, Go with the recommendations from the shop. There really isn't very much in my neck of the woods that will do it as we lost our last shop that could handle it here in Vacaville a few years ago. The NAPA store here in town...which is one of the best...has the ability. Just need to get it to them to have a look see....But as has been stated...It just might clean up and be a really good core....cr8crshr/Tuck

Update on free block

Looks like I got a keeper. I talked this afternoon with NAPA's machinist about my block. He proceeded to show me a before and after of a block he had in that was actually worse than mine and it cleaned up real nicely. They can get it done including a sonic bore check and get me set up to put it in storage until I have the time to get the machine work done. I need to get some Desiccant crystals and some type of machine oil to get i soaked and sealed in a giant plastic bag. The charge for the soaking and baking with sonic bore check, cam bearings removed, main caps and timing cover all cleaned up is 150.00. Not bad for a FREE engine....:blob1::blob1::blob1::blob1::blob1::blob1:

I love it when a plan comes together. That's why I love this hobby so much. The greenies should love us. We're takin recycling to a new level.

Yep. They had the special sauce. I don't know the concentration (maybe you do) but it worked very well.
