Tater tots were invented in 1953 when frozen food company Ore-Ida founders F. Nephi Grigg, Golden Grigg, and Ross Erin Butler Sr., were trying to figure out what to do with leftover slivers of cut-up potatoes from french fries they made. They chopped up the slivers, added flour and seasoning, then pushed the mash through holes and sliced off pieces of the extruded mixture. The name “tater tots” came a woman named Clora Lay Orton after the brothers created a contest with their friends and employees to create a name for the potato logs. Tater tots were first offered commercially in stores in 1956 with that name. Clora Lay Orton passed in 2001 at the age of 92...

Similar to the AROSA STAR that brought my dad and uncle over, around 1952.
There were several, we could only afford the bottom feeder ship of the day. It was so drafty I got double pneumonia and spent 30 days in the hospital after arriving in Canada, I was 9 months old and not expected to make it. Poor people have Poor ways.

My adoptive mom came over in similar circumstances. I started out in a polio ward. We’ve both lived the proverbial that which doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. And we’ve both had some nice mopars as a result.

My mom's family came over from Holland in 1955.
It was a miserable journey. Big storms at one point they only made 100 miles in 3 days.
She cried when she saw the statue of Liberty.

1955 was the year of Atlantic hurricanes, think 3 major of them. Waterbury and Naugatuck Valley severe flooding. Must've been a really rough trip.

* Vultures circling over a house is usually because of a gas leak. They smell ethyl mercaptan, which is added to gas to give it a smell and it’s also the smell that comes from rotten meat.

* Encephalitis & meningitis can be transmitted by sharing a joint or a slice of pizza or a beer or just inhaling a sneeze. 40% mortality rate — or worse

* Back in the 80's, there was a large display/sign board at the I-80 rest stop at the east end of the Bonneville Salt Flats that gave a very good account of the Donner Party, and how the salt flats were instrumental in their fate.

Before the Hollywood sign read "Hollywood", it read "Hollywoodland". The sign was first erected in 1923 as a temporary real estate advertisement; the "land" part came down in 1949, but the rest of the sign stayed because it was widely recognized by then. But - and get this - in 1924, a large, white dot, 35 feet in diameter and ringed with lights, was added under the sign. It was an eye-catching addition to an already famous sign, sure, but it also served as a political statement, reflecting the “good business conditions” of Los Angeles, a status that was noted with a white dot on a grayscale map produced by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. People began referring to Los Angeles as a “White Spot of America,” boasting that it was without crime, communism, and corruption. Thus, the white dot was added to the Hollywoodland sign, and the tagline “Keep the White Spot White” was used to promote investments in the area. The slogan had other connotations, as well, particularly in a city that was both anti-union and racially segregated at the time. My, how things have changed...
