Post up facts and things that hardly anyone knows...... (for entertainment purposes only. NO need to fact check)

:p The word Mopar is a portmanteau.

The girl's name 'Wendy' was invented by the author of the children's book 'Peter Pan'.

I have only ever met a few Wendy's in my lifetime..... not a commonly used name.

I have also met a Jamaican man who had a 'Wendy' tattoo ..... but that's another story for another forum.

At this and other sister websites in the F*BO collective, we have a set of rules.

Please do not fact-check.....just start following them. :poke:

Sir Henry Seagrave, first man to 200 land speed record, holder of land speed record at the same time THREE men died trying to take it, and first man to set a water speed record over 100 mph.....
died, on his third lap after setting the first water speed of 100 mph on his first two passes, along with the designer of the boat who was part of the attempt.....

in June of 1930.....

On Friday the 13th. And his name was Sea grave. One of three Land speed record holders killed, while attempting the water speed record. (Seagrave, Cobb, and Donald Campbell. Campbell's father Malcolm, also a Land speed record holder, retired, and lived a long life.)

Frank Lochhart, who patented the intercooler, was also an Indy 500 winner. He was faster than the then-current land speed record holder (the Triplex, 81 liters of liberty aircraft engine aboard, yep 4800+ cu inches) with a THREE liter car he built himself, when a tire exploded during his record attempt on the sands of Daytona, and he was killed. Because the aerodynamic spats on his tires made inspection difficult, his cut tire was not seen before the return run.

Everyone's familiar with chemically hardened glass, now known as 'Gorilla Glass', popular as tablet and phone screens. The first commercial use (then known as 'Chemcor') was the front windshield on the 1970 Javelin.

The current unlimited record is 511.11 km/h (317.59 mph), achieved by Australian Ken Warby in the Spirit of Australia on 8 October 1978. Warby's record was still standing more than 45 years later.

We met Ken Warby in Clayton maybe 10 years ago. He had an army surplus jet engine that he fitted himself.
Very nice man and easy to chat with my older son found him fascinating.

Adolph Wilhelm Machlet (1864-1955) invented nitriding in 1906.
