Post up facts and things that hardly anyone knows...... (for entertainment purposes only. NO need to fact check)

The Atacama Desert in Chile is the driest place on earth, with some areas receiving 1-3mm of rain per year, and other areas never recorded rain at all.
"And now for the weather forecast..."
"Sunny and dry today. Back to you, Dave"

Monowi, NE has only one resident. You guessed it, she's also the mayor and tax collector.

This is what Stonehenge looked like when finished, although construction of different sections took place over a 2,000 year period in five different stages.

Before the Compact Cassette, in 1958 RCA offered a tape cartridge using 1/4" tape, with 30 minutes of recording time per side.

Phillips, who had recently released a small portable reel-to-reel recorder using transistors, liked this idea and in 1962 got a patent for their Compact Cassette which, along with associated recording and playback machines, went on sale to the public later the next year.

Not having much success with their own offering, RCA stopped selling their version in 1964.

Not learning from this lesson, years later in 1978 Sony thought they'd try another 1/4" tape, named "Elcaset", on the theory that faster tape speeds and a wider tape surface would give superior sound to the small cassette. However, at the same time other companies (such as Nakamichi) pushed hard to improve the sound of Compact Cassettes, plus better noise reduction systems (Dolby C, DBX for example) and metal tapes coming to market meant that only a few extreme audiophiles ever bought Sony's new device. A few years later, everyone was switching to compact discs.

Without this portable cassette recorder, we might not have the song "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction".

The technology was only two years old but Keith Richards liked the battery powered machine to record song ideas. According to music historian John Covach, “He gets up one morning and he notices the cassette machine has gone all the way to the end but he doesn't remember recording anything. So he rewinds and listens. He hears himself getting up in the middle of the night, playing ‘(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction,’ and then there's a half-hour of snoring.”

The members of the band 'The Police' were originally brunettes.

They dyed their hair blonde to appear in a Wrigley's chewing gum commercial, liked the look and kept it.
The commercial ended up not being aired.

Air France Concorde was painted up in Pepsi colours for a promotion back in the 80's. Unfortunately, it was a flop ....much like the promotion for Pepsi.

Due to the darker paint the Concorde was unable to achieve supersonic speeds and therefore had to be painted white again before going back into service.
As the airplane speeds up, it expands - growing up to nine inches longer during Mach 2 flight.

I was lucky enough to get some original slides from the Promotion company who were involved in the publicity - as they lived about 2 blocks from my flat in London at the time.

The longest Golf Putt in history .......

The world’s longest serving Concorde pilot, Captain Jock Lowe, was thrilled to take the US Ryder Cup team from New York to Malaga, Spain (in 1997) year and be part of a new record - the longest putt in history. As Jock flew Concorde at 1,330 miles an hour, Brad Faxon made a 23-second putt 120 feet down the cabin into an overturned teacup - as the aircraft covered a distance of 8.5 miles.

Nine inches??
I had to look this up. It seemed impossible!

The article states 30 mm which is what? 1 3/16". Is that in diameter or in length?

Up to nine inches in total length - haps opened up all over the aircraft - it only takes a small amount along the entire length to add up fast.

Some of those articles printed these days are AI generated from tosh that other people have written while being mis-informed.

I have been on-board two different Concorde aircraft and have taken a keen interest in that aircraft type for 30 years or more.

So much for the topic title.....not having to Fact Check.

Come on, man...It just seemed impossible.
I thought you might have been exaggerating to see who was paying attention.
