My dad called me today from his work with a question about why the powder coating on their panels was easily chipping from the edge. I glanced at the part and asked "laser cut" and he said yes. So I thought I would let others know that these types of cut can leave a scale that needs to be removed. It may look smooth but if tapped will flake off easily.

It sounds more to me like insufficient prep in failing to remove the scale residue first. If the panels aren't being blasted and phosphate coated prior to powder coating, it just won't last. Your dad should get with his coater (and maybe the powder manufacturer too) and review their procedures. It's probably something simple. Chipping can also be attributed to overcuring.

Thanks to both of you, that's good information to know... prep is everything

Yes prep is everything but most will just have the parts made then cleaned and coated And when the coating fails they blame the coating. I learned the laser cut scale issues 20 yrs. ago the hard way So while it was fresh on my mind I just thought I would Tell others in case they come across this themselves.
