I had the temporary paint sand blasted off of my new Hedman headers. The VHT flameproof spray paint says for best adherence use the primer. With the new very rough finish from the sandblasting, do you think I still need to use the primer?

Never had VHT that stayed on very long......period.

try kbh coatings. they also require a primer, but it works. x2 on the VHT, burned off in a week.

BBQ paint, works perfect!

Yup, it’s got a very high temp and works great on blasted parts.

Adds a bit of flavor, kinda strong though.

So.... does a sand blasted surface need primer?

If your gonna primer an item that’s gonna get really hot, don’t expect it to last. I’d just use the paint. Also most high temp paints need the heat to cure them.

I don't prime but I did coat them good with "Metal Prep" first. It made a significant difference in how long the spray coating lasted.

All that ^^^^ plus heat cycle them a couple times to bake the new coating.
Just run the temp up then shut it down and let them cool off a couple times before running for a long time.
If your breaking a new cam in ect at the same time, then forget the heat cycle crap for the headers and follow the cam break in instructions.

I also purchased the VHT high temp primer and coating, but the day to remove the engine still has to come...

As from what i understand is, as already mentioned, it is quite important to bake the paint prior to get it really hot.
I believe the time between applying and its first heat treatment should not be too long also as it is kind of waiting to get "baked".

The Eastwood brush on coating also worked well when I used it.
