I have used a Firecore distributor along with a FBO ignition box with rev limiter on my past 3 motors with zero problems.
I am just starting talks with a very well known engine builder for my next project. He actually built my last motor a couple of years ago and used a Firecore because I requested it. He now is saying that they have been having problems with the Firecores and wants me to go with a MSD ready to run instead. I want to stay with what I am familiar with, unless there are issues with the current run. Can anybody give me some input?

I had some quality control issues with mine when new. Nothing I couldn’t repair, just disappointing to see. Once I rebuilt it I have had no problems with it.
(2 years old iirc, 5000-6000 miles).
If I needed a new distributor I would be looking at other options but wouldn’t rule out another firecore.

Over the course of maybe a month the internals failed in mine. Great price but you get what you pay for. Get a ready to run

Got mine in April ,started great, sound great, out of the box, shaft broke within 20 miles of easy drivin, putting in MSD this weekend

Tried the MSD RTR... engine wouldn’t fire at all. Bad right out of the box.
Your already using Dons FBO box, call him up and tell him you want the distributor as well.

I like his boxes, but had a lot of problems with his distributors. I see in addition to his standard one he is selling a unit that looks a whole lot like a Firecore. Not sure if it is or not.

I love my FBO box so far. I got the distributor from Don at the same time, setup according to what I told him about my engine mods.
I think since then he may be using a different vacuum advance can on the distributor? Mine is supposed to be adjustable, by inserting an Allen wrench through the vacuum can nipple, but I have never been able to get the Allen wrench to "bite" on anything to make the adjustment. Don had said something about that when we last spoke, but I don't know if he has made any changes.
I also like the Pertronix billet aluminum distributor with Ignitor III technology. I put that in my wife's GTO 421 Tripower. I am going to tinker with the weights and springs and advance limiter on a dyno day and see what happens.
I am probably going to see if there is a programmable ignition system once I go with a high performance engine build, thinking that may allow some extra power when I run race fuel at the track, but also allow for 9X octane fuel on the street. I just don't know who makes a system like that, that's compatible with carburetors. If I add a 100 or so Nitrous plate, I may want to dial back the timing a couple of degrees, but automatically, only when the NO2 is spraying.

Well we got the MSD in in one day, starts better, runs better, stock springs.used the small cap pro billet and digital 6al.no more Crome box for me
