Pulling driveshaft

Hi folks, Newby here working through an engine swap on my 63 Sport Fury Convertible. I've read up on everything I can regarding pulling the drive shaft, transmission, engine, etc.

Tonight I was able to free up the rear of the driveshaft, and from all I've read, it should just pull out of the tail of the transmission. Mine will slide back/forth about 3" freely, but there is something stopping it cold when I try to slide it out. I pulled off the band clamps on the boot thinking it was the holdup, freed up the boot, but still something is keeping it in. Do I need to undo the nuts in the picture? I've got the shaft held up on a floor jack meanwhile, not going to force anything. Advice appreciated!

Remove the four nuts/bolts on the transmission flange, and it will DROP out. You are only exercising the ball & trunnion part of the shaft.
 
As a fellow 63 vert guy, interested to know more on what you're planning to do and maybe send a photo of your car if ya can.
 
So I'm working with Gary Pavlovich and Bruce Toth to build a stroker 390. Using Gary's cam, and his amazing guidance. Bruce is doing the heads, most everything else is new. It all started when I found the existing 318 was leaking everywhere. I figured I'd have to pull the motor to fix the leaks. Mine is a A833 4 speed, was like that when I bought it. I've since learned that they didn't offer 4 speed on the 63, mine originally had three on the tree. I'll be keeping the dual quads on the new engine. Old one had them but was a bit of a disappointment in the performance department....

Like the color, one of my favorites. Kinda unusual far as I know...a SF with column manual. Didn't think most SF's had the poly either; would a guessed more likely to have a 361 or 383. If it had the dual quads, that likely was from an older late 50's teen. I had one of those mani's sold it year or so ago. Stock teen's in '63 didn't have factory dual exhaust; but suppose that could be ordered out or maybe was available on SF's. Have you checked out the data plate on the car?
 
I have a good friend who has a real nice 63 Sport Fury. It is an original 318 poly car with three on the tree. He kept it that way, but did swap a cast iron 4bbbl intake and Carter AFB on to it and changed to dual exhaust. Only three on the tree Sport Fury I had ever seen.
 
In '63 I don't think the 318 came with a 4bbl either - the prior owner had one in his box of parts he let me take with the car. If I recollect the research I did on these cars years ago, duals and a 4bbl were available on the '62 and think the 4bbl mani was from a '62. I thought it kinda odd to have a stock 318 with dual quads on it back in '57 or '58 from da factory. With my re-done poly suppose those would be a nice addition; but didn't want to have the extra carb on it to putz with I'd so seldom use. They do look cool. Try and find the oval air cleaners those had on them...wow, worth much more than their weight in gold.
