this isn't a good pic but, i mocked up a distributor in the vice, pulled vacuum with my vacuum gadget, and stuck a brass feeler gauge between the reluctor and magnet. this is how i do it. i can't be done in the car. distributor needs to come out.
old_skool: I actually posted that here quite a while ago. The original post was from a Chevy site by batman09, who was a GM engineer. I recommend full manifold vacuum for the reasons he points out in the article. Guys will still argue for ported spark but I've never seen it laid out as well as this guy does. And yes, the factory did it, but for the reasons stated. Still a good read...
