Hey guys I have a 69 Bee 383 with ram charger hood , anyway want to shelf the matching number 383 and build another for it. Was wanting to do a 440 but want to use the ramcharger air cleaner/ hood and keep it looking bone stock using my HP ex manifolds but new low rise inlet man and carby. How much higher will a 440 sit ? can I use original ramcharger set up ??? Anyone done this and have any advise for me, should I just do a low deck build ? Thanks

This may not be popular, but how about dropping a 440 crank in the 383. You wont have to modify the 383 at all, so it wont devalue the #'s matching motor. Same process as a 451 stroker only it will yield 426ci if standard bore. Take it to a show and it will still be #'s matching. Depending on condition of your motor and what you have on it, you'll probably be able to reuse most of the parts.

I like your idea but don't want to hurt the original engine, want to go to the drags and not worrie about blowing it. Would love to do a 440/512 with stealth heads and paint it all with no shinny bits, stock looking except for inlet and carb . But not sure on clearance. The RT uses the same ramcharger and its a 440 so what's the difference ?

Well
The 383 Bee AND the 440 Bee all had the same:
Hood
Air grabber set-up
Motor mounts
Heads
Manifold was different...
So, in my opinion a built 440 will match right up!

A 440 will work with your Ramcharger hood IF you use a stock 440 intake manifold and a stock 440 air cleaner base. But WHO builds a new engine and uses the stock intake manifold? NOBODY, that's who.

The stock 440 (RB engine) is 3/4" taller than a stock 383 (B engine), therefore the factory used an air cleaner base on the 440 that was cut down 3/4" shorter than the 383 air cleaner base. This resulted in the same overall underhood height of the two engines when used with the Ramcharger hood. There are a number of popular aftermarket intakes that can be used to increase intake flow on your new engine build. However, not many will fit and still allow you to use your Ramcharger hood. You will HAVE to use the air cleaner base from a 440, not the original from your 383. But that will just get you back to EVEN on the height if you use a 440 (RB) engine. It will not give you any additional margin for your intake manifold on an RB engine.

As previously suggested, you could stroke a 383 (B engine), or better yet get a 400 block (B engine) and stroke it. I've done both (383 to 426 with 440 crank)(400 to 499) and the 400/499 is also going in my 69 Super Bee with Ramcharger hood just like yours, so I've been where you are heading. I will include a photo of the 499 with the Ramcharger and also a table I set up with measurements of some various intake manifolds that I was considering using. Maybe it will help you decide what you want to do. Good luck!

I can't upload the info on the intake manifolds as it is in Excel format. When I try to cut and paste just the table, it gets all scrambled and makes no sense. So, I'll just try to summarize the table. Note, these measurements are all valid ONLY IF using a B engine (383 or 400).

The Edelbrock Performer RPM intake P/N 7186 (which seems to be what everyone wants to use) WILL NOT FIT under your Ramcharger hood. It will be almost an inch too tall, even when using the shorter 440 air cleaner base.

The Edelbrock Performer intake P/N 2186 WILL fit and will be almost exactly the same height as stock if you use the shorter 440 air cleaner base. This is the intake I chose to use on my 499 stroker.

The Mopar Performance M1 intake P/N MP4529117 will fit and you can use your stock 383 air cleaner base with this one.

The Edelbrock Torker 383 intake P/N 3010 looks like it will fit using the shorter 440 air cleaner base. Overall height will then end up being about 3/16" taller than stock. No guarantees here, you MIGHT have a little interference with the Ramcharger hood.

The Weiand Action +Plus intake P/N 8008 will fit if you use the shorter 440 air cleaner base. It will end up almost exactly the same height as stock (0.055" taller).

Good point about building a low block stoker and it doesn't have to be your original block. Grab a 400 and build a 451 and find the 440 air cleaner base to compensate for a taller intake. The overall height doesn't have to be exactly the same. I ran a torker with my 383 air grabber base and it worked OK. Your biggest problem will be finding a 440 base.

Well, one idiot does and he runs high 12's with it. LOL!

Thanks guys, mopars n missiles that's 1 pretty engine, just what I want stock looking with some extra sting. What sort of HP/TQ are you looking at ? Want to keep the HP manifolds, don't really like headers

Thanks for the compliment, hopefully it will be a lot more than "pretty" and have plenty of "sting". As I stated it is a 400/499 stroker going into my '69 Bee. I built it with a goal of 600/600 torque/horsepower. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get it on the engine dyno like I wanted to before I had to get it installed in the car. Now I'll have to do the break-in with it in the car and then eventually get it on a chassis dyno sometime in the future to find out what I've got. The biggest compromises were with the manifolds, both intake and exhaust. Otherwise it should easily make the numbers.

You sound exactly like me, I didn't want headers either and staying with the Ramcharger hood was a must. And I can always go to headers later and/or change the hood for a different intake if I'm not satisfied with this setup. I also set aside the numbers engine/transmission for peace of mind.

That's cool, and it doesn't make you an idiot, I'm sure you had your reasons for doing it that way. But my point was, for the most part people will replace the stock intake for an aluminum aftermarket intake for better flow and less weight. Two birds with one stone.

Tell us exactly what you built and what you're running it in to get those 12's? Please do.

As for the 440 base air cleaner, they are being reproduced now. I got one from BE&A. Not perfect, but not bad either.

You must be my brother from a different mother lol. You have got just what I want MnM. What r your specs if ya don't mind ? Heads ? Stroker kit ? Cam shaft. So hard to do anything over here there is only a handful of 440s up for reco starting at $2000to $2700 I really prob only need the block n caps but no 400 engines or blocks anywhere I've been looking over here and not to many I've seen in US either, guess you need to know where to look. Anybody have a spare 400 for sale ???

Crank and rods are Eagle, pistons are forged ICON. Block girdle kit w/main studs. Heads are Edelbrock Performer RPM 60929 CNC ported w/ 2.190 intakes and 1.810 exhausts. Cam is a Hughes HEH4650BL3-12, 246/250 duration, 112 LSA, .379/.385 lobe lift with 1.6 roller rockers for total lift of .606/.616

As for a 400 block to build, a couple of options if you can afford to ship. Hughes Engines can provide you a fully machined block ready to assemble or they will fully build the engine to your specs and then ship to you. I know Dave has shipped engines to Austrailia in the past.

Another possibility, a couple friends of mine are in the Mopar parts business and last I knew they had 2 or 3 400 blocks for sale, as well as others. You would have to take care of all the arrangements for the shipping, as I don't think they want to mess around with international shipping. I could put you in touch with them if you want to go that way.
