Is there any evidence that leads you to believe it has been VIN swapped?

Yes a Tach has been added and haven't found build sheet. Are there Serial numbers on trans and Block that will help. 62,000 miles on odo Windsheild has been Replaced , Rough cut hole in floor for shifter every thing else looks

Could have been an auto car, and still an RR.

I don't think a tach was standard on the RR.

In 68 there may, may have been a stamping on the back of the block by the oil sender.
Difficult to read, or even find.
Not sure on trans.

Does the VIN tag look "funny", IE rivets, placement, paint, etc?

That might be an exorcism to cast off the poor quality gremlins.

If the engine is VIN stamped - back by the oil pressure sender, on the bellhousing flange - the trans should be also, same area.
Decor Group came along late enough that the odds are pretty good for stamping.
It'll be something like "8G123456" or 8A-etc depending on assembly plant.
Also, look along the pan rails of engine & trans and see what #s may be there, on 4-speed they're about middle of the case.
Tach was optional, but many were added during restorations.
