Reality Check: The Collector-Car Market Has Reached Correction Territory

I've had some great cars and I think I had the most fun with them. The owners now don't drive them and just let them sit or trailer them to shows so other people can look at them. The hobby is different things to different people. There was a time I thought it would be nice to have about nice 10 Hemi cars, now I think more than 1 car would just be a huge PITA to look after. I know some people find comfort in looking at all their cars sitting idle in their warehouse/garage but that's just not for me.

it's coming
That's one way of saying it with-out getting the thread moved... Around here prices rising, Sales of stuff I never thought people would sell and restaurants laying off staff, stores not hiring extra help for holidays etc... Someone's doing a GREAT job! LMAO

Oh, I can virtually GUARANTEE that the 'market' is heading for a 'correction' ; I'm probably gonna hafta sell my car, so expect at least a 50% haircut...

Took one of my cars to a local car cruise in last weekend. Had several people as "how much is it worth". I just said, about 100 smiles.

Lol, I have had a few ask “How much would you sell it for?” Well, it’s not on sale; but for the right price, it can be yours. One guy was quite persistent. How much do you want for it? I say I don’t know; I don’t have a for sale sign on it. Again “Come on, how much will you take for it? I reply, offer me a price and I’ll let ya know. Guy got all pissy like this chat we’re having is my fault, finally walking on...

have been seeing some deals on number 2 and 3 cars, projects etc.

I'll let you know when it's a rock bottom because that's when i'll have to sell.

Someone like that is usually thinking, you may be stupid and throw a lowball price. I actually had someone ask me that same exact question for one of my cars. My answer: you probaby don't have enough coin in your piggy bank. He scowled and walked away. Or, throw a stupidly high price at 'em... they'll cower and walk away silently... while you giggle !

My cars are an investment. In me. When I decided I was done flipping houses after 20 years, I bought my first. Then I bought 5 more, all drivers, no show cars. On about the 3rd one my wife asked me what I was up to. I told her I'm flipping cars now. She said, 'but you haven't sold any'. I explained that you don't buy an asset and sell it the next day for a profit. You have to wait for it to appreciate. We're in the appreciation period. I recently sold the first one and got all the money back that I spent on it plus the transportation cost for me and my buddy to drive down to SoCal and bring it home. Everything but my tax and license, a few hundred dollars. But I got the adventure to buy it and drove it for a couple years. I call that a win. With 5 classics, a Vette and a Slingshot I don't drive any of them a lot but they all get into the rotation. Some people feel bad if they don't use their vehicles. I don't. I just parked a portion of my savings in the garage. I'm having fun and that rules the day. Making money is not important.

Price of classics dropping and cost of restoration rising. Lot of people over their heads except for the ultra rare and high end collector cars.

My kid and a friend of his, taken a couple of weeks ago.

Except for the '02 TrailBlazer winter beater in there this could be early to mid 80s when I was their age.
His buddy just bought that blue Camaro a few days before. They were seeing if the factory 8track player would work with some I still have laying around.
You may not get that 100k for that slant 6 Duster you have been restoring, but I think there is enough interest in old cars with a personality for things to continue.
Also, you can't compare model Ts and brass era decline with 60-70s cars. Every vehicle in the the pictures can cruise at 70+ mph, the truck and the Coronet both have OD in them and can run 80mph for hours at mid 2k rpm

I had an idea along the resto when I was dropping money I knew I’d never get for it. Wasn’t in it to sell it – just make it the way I wanted it. My guess, I’m around 15-grand more than I could expect to sell it for. Meanwhile enjoy driving it as I like it is the objective.

Before restoring it, already having it 15 years, wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it thinking of getting another ride. Decided I’d try selling it in a car corral, was in nice shape being a CA car and had already put $5k in it. Paid $5.5k for it putting up a price of $12k knowing it was worth every dollar. Guy leaves me a Vmail saying he’d give me $6k and to call him back. I didn’t. Hour or so later when returning to my car the guy walks over to me kinda peeved asking why I didn’t call him back. I said you really expected me to call you back with your offer, your kiddin right?

Gotta love people like this. But guess I can’t fault people who have the nads to make the heady lowball attempts. I’ve heard of incredible deals some guys have snagged that left me envious.
