Rear Axle Bearings: Stock vs. "Green"

The Greens are a clever solution but since we have to option I'd use the OEM tapered roller bearings. Timken SET 7 is what to ask for.
 
I ordered the Timken SET7's from Rockauto. Good price, and typically quick delivery.

Thanks for everyone's input. It sounds like the ball bearings are working for some people, but think I'll keep the stock arrangement. For me it's no problem getting them adjusted. From my engineering knowledge, the tapered roller bearings are a much better lateral loading choice, but I'm also not opposed to learning about new technology as it appears. Thought I'd inquire about the green bearings, but sounds like stock is still best in this application.

I agree with the tapered roller bearing being a better solution, however, I currently run green bearings with disc brakes in my Dana. I've hit tons of potholes and they are still working fine. I always wanted to try a tapered roller bearing with disc brakes because most people say you can't. Anyone running rear discs using the stock tapered roller bearings?

Yep but I made my own rear brake mounts
 
Can I ask a follow up question: Anyone running Wilwood or Summit Racing rear discs using the stock tapered roller bearings?

From reading each of their install instructions the green snap ring bearings are needed. Summit's may work with stock but mods will be needed for some bracket.
 
I used the Baer rear disc kit so I can use my 15" Magnum wheels. Wilwood or Summit Racing rear discs you need to have 17" wheels.
 
I have Wilwoods on the rear with 15x8 wheels. Did you guys make a sliding caliper mount to allow for the side play?

I don't remember as it's been about 6 years since I put them on. They're the smaller versions. Not the 12.19" rotor.

I wasn't trying to correct you, I was really inquiring as to how to make rear discs work with tapered roller bearings. I have an 8-3/4 I'd like to build and use the tapered roller bearings with rear disc brakes.
 
Ok. Did research on the Baer website. Their system can be used with stock tapered bearings as well shafts upgraded to the green bearings.

Did not doubt you Car Nut, just went to double check.

Car Nut: did you purchase directly from Baer or some other outfit? Do you recall which kit part number you used for front and rear? There is a wide price range on their kits. I'll be doing this disc upgrade on a 66 coronet which is not specifically listed on their site. I have an 8.75 rear end. I'll call them up tomorrow.

This is more appealing to me as it sounds like I can truly bolt a Baer kit on. With the other options a green bearings would need to be pressed in and the pumpkin would need to be opened and some parts may need to be removed.

Now, the cost benefit analysis comes.
 
Tapered rollers. Chrysler used them for a reason.
They have a place but ball bearing are a degrade.
What's next? Ball bearing on the front spindles?
 
Most new cars use roller bearings....must be a reason, lol!!!!
