Replacing axle seals and bearings on my 65 Sattelite. The local parts stores only list once gasket between the axle flange and the bearing retainer. It has a v shaped groove. Can I use the same one between the brake backing plate and the retainer. The one I took off was a foam gasket.

Most of the white foam gaskets Chrysler used are easy to duplicate by using shipping foam. Think of making your own gaskets as recycling/slowing down the filling of landfills!

You want the foam gasket there. Helps keep the grease in. The axle bearing retainer flange is kind of wimpy and will deflect some.

If the grease is leaking the outer seal has failed. In 45 years of doing this stuff I've never put a foam seal on a retainer plate.
