If you widen the rear end a couple inches per side, it would allow someone to use a much larger variety of wheels and tires. With some wheels, the offset and wheel backspacing just aren't made to work on some cars.

I don't remember his reason....just built it as he asked.

Homemade but made it all at work during slack times.

I'll admit, I'm curious. I would have guessed finding a WIDER axle would be a lot easier than widening one. Most axles getting narrowed is to get a heavier, stronger axle to fit in a smaller car. (Or, more tire room!) Going the other way is odd.
Cranky, was that an 8 3/4?
