If you widen the rear end a couple inches per side, it would allow someone to use a much larger variety of wheels and tires. With some wheels, the offset and wheel backspacing just aren't made to work on some cars.

C bodie has a wider 8 3/4 than a B body has also could work

Take another look, there is an internal alignment bar holding the bearing race location....

I'll admit, I'm curious. I would have guessed finding a WIDER axle would be a lot easier than widening one. Most axles getting narrowed is to get a heavier, stronger axle to fit in a smaller car. (Or, more tire room!) Going the other way is odd.

Yeah, and the OUTSIDE of the housing is misaligned.
