Recommendations on removing heater hose nipples

Before I go too crazy in trying to get these out, I want to see what others have done to remove them. I've tried the vise grip and hammer deal. Soaked the bases in PB oil and tried. Used the slot at the top and that didn't work. I'm trying not to break them obviously, but if they do, all well. I'll deal with that issue if it arises.

Lube the nipples with some good penetrant.

Heat gently and twist with vice-grips.

Take you time.

I had some that were difficult to remove. Heated them with a torch, sprayed cold water on them. Then they came out.

On the BB water pump just leave nipple in place and take off bolt behind it last using open end wrench. Leaving bolt trapped behind nipple.

After 50 or so years they are not coming out easy if at all.

Insert a large punch, as close to nipple ID as you have, and use a smaller size pipe wrench. The nipple will not collapse with solid steel inside. Put pipe dope on the threads when reinstalling.

Lots of heat.
My last ones broke off so I drilled and tapped new npt threads. They are old and rusty and will fight you.

Oxy acetylene Torch, turn orange, let cool naturally for a few minutes, remove. Don't use any water!

15 Bucks CDN... 12 US.. head for Home Depot and try those first. Wish I'd known when I did mine with a heat wrench.... lol

As crazy as it sounds, apply some good heat to it and feed a birthday candle right where the pipe meets the water pump. While it it still hot tap on the top with a hammer to try to "shock" the rusted threads. Do this a few times and then use a vice grip to loosen. As another post shared, put a punch in the pipe before using the vice grips to keep the pipe from collapsing. It also helps if you alternate between tightening and loosening. You may have to do the wax thing a few times but I have never had this fail. That one looks pretty crusty, so you'll have some fun with it.

Those internal pipe wrenches worked great. Although it did break on the last one. Took it back and exchanged it though. Along with some heat, both fittings came right out. Thank you folks again for the suggestions!

Frankly, I'm aghast at all the barbaric recommendations for treating nipples.

When new ones are $15.00, I wouldn't try to save and re-use the 50+ year old crusty ones. Just use a little heat and a regular plumbers pipe wrench as close to the base as you can get and twist them out. It will destroy them but who cares. Also 1970-up used a smaller size outlet nipple (1/2" vs 5/8"), be sure to get the right ones for your car.
