My 1974 Dodge Coronet needs new rear wheel bearings.
I see those one-piece repair bearings on a few shopping sites, but what I do not understand, is how the inner axle stays in place with those bearings. You install the bearing in the housing and then slide the axle in and then lock it with the C-clip in the differential housing, but this can't be right, or is it?
With original bearings, the bearings and inner shaft are kept in place with the plate with 5 nuts at the end of the axle, so how does this go with those repair bearings?
 
Suit yourself, but if you're going to replace what you have, I would and did myself, go with the tapered bearing. It's just as much work either way. Up to you.
 
It's a 8 1/4 axle and it does have c-clips, according to the workshop manual.
I was looking at these bearings and I wondered how the axle stays in place. The video doesn't show.
 
The C-clips hold it in. You have to drop the cover, remove the small bolt holding the spyder gear shaft (5/16" wrench) rotate differential to allow the shaft to fully exit the ring gear carrier, then rotate an axle to move the spyder gears to the carrier "windows" and remove them (watch for the thrust washers). Push the axles in and remove the C-clips. Pull the axles all the way out to service the roller bearings. You will need a puller to remove them from the housing and measure the depth before doing the removal to ensure proper depth upon installation. Be sure to carefully inspect the bearing wear band on the shafts as the shaft IS the inner bearing race. If the axle/s are too worn, they will need to be replaced. I do recall a repair bearing being available to place the rollers in a different location on the shaft. It's been decades since I had to do this operation but, I do have 2 bearing removal tools I fabbed to handle 8+9 1/4" axle bearings.

If it has c clips you get to open the rear diff and that stuff is overpoweringly smelly and impossible to get out of clothes. Wear something disposable

Thanks for the explanation!
I've got all the necessary tools to pull, measure and install everything.
I just wasn't too sure about just the c-clips holding the inner shaft in place.
