Anyone have experience in welding blocks? I have an opportunity to pick up a complete 6.1 srt engine with a slight blemish.

It sucked waterr and chucked the rod. The big end is still on the crank and spins ok. I cant see up inside but the heads and intake should be worth paying the core charge of 500 bucks.

There is a machine shop in Goldsboro, NC that specializes in welding blocks. Their process is phenomenal! I have seen the work performed by them over the years on some pretty damaged blocks and when they are done externally you cannot tell it ever had a crack.

What about getting another block? Another method of repair is the lock stitch, but best if you have the missing piece.

I dont have the missing piece, but I do have a 5.7 block that is no good that a piece could be taken out of to fill this hole

I also read that the blocks are made of grey iron and that type of iron is considered easier to weld.

Theres a lot of info out there on welding cast. The block should be warm never cold. I heard guys buying a cheap cast iron frying pan and cutting it up for pieces. Id find the proper cast rod 3/32 make a steel patch that fits perfect and weld it up. Don't let the block cool off to fast.

Why don't you pull the engine a part and see if there is any more damage and than decide to fix or get and new block completely. Just my .02 cent

I got he heads and oil pan off. #7 and #8 rods snapped. #7 cylinder has a few very minor marks in wall. The piston cooling jet for the 2 was wiped out too. I might be able to get away with honing #7. If not then it gets an over bore.
Bent a few pushrods and some valves. Broke the head off #8 intake valve. Head look fine though which is good. All in all its salvageable.
