Replace pinion seal in 742 case problem

Guy has 6 left 1828719, a little pricey at $37.50 shipped plus sales tax.

Yeah, A little pricey but considering another guy in Missouri wants $55.00 plus $11.00 shipping for the same one and the National one I got from Oreilly's was $33.75, it probably is reasonable. The one I got from Dr Diff. was $10.00 plus $18.00 shipping.
With it all said and done, I'm kinda wishing I would have just got the leather factory Mopar one. It lasted over 50 years before starting to drip.

The problem I ran into was there are two rubber seals out there and the leather. Mostly you'll get the rubber single groove one. Cass (Dr. Diff) sells the double seal one. The leather one I tried would leak. The one I got from Cass is doing well.

Do you know what the torque was before on the nut? If it came apart and went back exactly the same as far as the pinion depth shims are concerned, the only thing I can think is maybe you are torqueing it down tighter than it was before. A lot of times when you first torque them it will feel tight until you rotate it a few time by hand because the bearing and everything is being seated, but after few rotations if its correct it will loosen up, if not you have a problem. Normally I try to torque to the minimum torque spec first and move up if necessary.
The torque for a 741/742 case is like 240 ft lbs when all the shims are installed properly. The “torque matching” method is for the 489 case which uses a crush sleeve.
