Richard Petty: Danica will win 'if everybody else stayed home'


Richard Petty doesn’t expect Danica Patrick to win on the NASCAR circuit.

Petty, answering questions Sunday at the Canadian Motorsports Expo, was asked if Patrick would ever win in the Sprint Cup Series. His answer, according to the Wheels Automotive Network’s website, was fairly blunt.

“If everybody else stayed home,” Petty said.

A seven-time Cup champion and inaugural NASCAR Hall of Famer, Petty knows something about winning, considering he won a record 200 times at the Cup level.

A co-owner of Richard Petty Motorsports, Petty is glad that Patrick is competing in NASCAR. The former IndyCar driver is entering her third season of full-time NASCAR racing and second at the Cup level for Stewart-Haas Racing. Last year, she finished 27th in the standings with her only top-10 finish an eighth in the Daytona 500, the highest finish for a woman ever in the event. She started on the pole for that race, the only Cup pole ever won by a female.

“If she’d have been a male, nobody would ever know if she’d showed up at a race track,” Petty said, according to the Wheels Automotive Network website. “This is a female deal that’s driving her. There’s nothing wrong with that, because that’s good PR for me. More fans come out, people are more interested in it. She has helped to draw attention to the sport, which helps everybody in the sport.”

She's by far not my favorite driver but

27th is still 16 spots ahead of a bunch of supposedly really good men drivers... I really don't get the hatred for her, she's doing what most men would love to do, she's great for a sponsor, winning or not... As much as I respect/love "the king" his 200+ wins as a driver & owner, I really don't like the misogynistic 50's mentality of the old guard, good ol'boys club of NASCAR...

Anyone in the field could win one of the cup races at Daytona or Talledega where the finishes are kind of a crap shoot. All she has to do is stay in the lead pack, be lucky enough not to crash out, and she has a shot at winning. The other tracks are going to be a lot tougher. I've heard her described as a good driver but an average racer and I agree with that assessment. She needs to show some fairly dramatic improvement in the next year or so or she will just kind of fade away. I like the fact that Danica is in NASCAR and attracts fans that might not otherwise care about stock car racing. I think she is generally good for racing and I hope she does well this year. We'll see.

I don't know man, the Cope twins might be hotter.

As far as straight up female NASCAR drivers, I think Johanna Long will be better and Chrissie Wallace is better than Danica. Hell, even Jennifer Jo Cobb may be better. If it weren't for the IndyCar experience, I'm not sure Danica would even be in Sprint Cup.

There are some drivers in cars that are not top notch but seem to get to the front on a regular basis and there are drivers in great cars that never make it to the top 10 and it doesn't take much to make a car not be top notch. There are very few drivers that can drive just about anything to the front but that has got harder and harder to do in recent times. Experience plays a big role with this kind of racing and imo, she has a ways to go yet. And yeah, she's easy on the eyes but as far as being hot goes.....I think she's more of a hot head than anything.

I didn't read it as the King is down on her because she is a woman. He just doesn't think she's that great a driver and wouldn't have all the attention and rides if she wasn't a woman. He was a driver and I never was soooo ....
