What could the widest 15" diameter wheel be to fit a stock rear wheel well?...

car currently has stock 4 wheel drum brakes and has 6" x 15" Ralleys and I'd like to go to 10"s on the rear if possible .... your thoughts ?

Me thinks 10” may be too wide. I couldn’t fit them under mine but I have a 68.

I have to agree with GetX'd. The sweet spot seems to be 8 to 8 1/2 rim with 4 1/2 backspace. Quite centered in the available space, and will hold a very substantial tire. A ten, even centered up perfectly will be too close to the fender and the springs.
If ideal backspace isnt available on the wheel style you choose, i would always go for too much backspace (moving the wheel more toward the springs). Then a spacer can put the wheel exactly where it needs to be. Too little backspace , and the rim gets too close to the fender, and then you cant put on a large tire. I have three cars that i use spacers on to get the wheel where i want it.

I have 15 x 8 rims with 4 1/2 backspacing. Front tires are 245/60R15 (no that is not a misprint, they fit fine) and 275/60R15 in the back. Take a look to see if that is your cup of tea...

I had 15x8's (chrome reverse) under my 69 road runner. No mods of any kind. however for about $70 you can get a tool that will answer your question and allow to give to a supplier the back spacing you need so it clears. I have 15 x10's inside the wheel wells of my 66 satellite. find it on line: Percy's WheelRite Tool

always keep the back spacing as negative as possible ( deeper on the inside than out side). The more positive the harder on bearings! Take a broom hold it near the head ( working part) and see how easy it is to hold. Now hold it by the tip of the handle. See the difference! Your hand is the axle bearings.

If you have stock break drums? Don't dismiss 14" rim options. You get more tire under the well. Including 50s. And if steel rim? (Which is how RR came) You get more tire at less weight. It's not just about width.

I opted for what my brother calls “5th Ave. wheels”, because they come on most all mid 70’s 5th Avenues. They were $12 a piece at the pick and pull, and they’re 15x7”. At that price point, they’re perfect for me and my budget minded look! Tires are 245/60/15
