My 69 has just started having issues being started. The keys will go into the ignition and turn to the on position and aux position just fine but, now it will not attempt to start. It will not click or turn over. I took off the chrome locking plate and was able to pull it down to check out the wiring, seemed fine. Put it back into place and it started. Thought I fixed it, wrong, later today it happened again. Could it be the part of the ignition that turns with the key? Thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Need more information... Is the Key switch able to turn to all Position? What ignition system to you Have points or electronic.
Is the car 4speed or automatic.
You must have a fully charged Battery & good grounds.
Have you tried to jump start car at starter relay on firewall?
or jump natural safety?

Here some nice information..

Check the neutral safety switch.

Need to get your test light out to do a few checks, But Try moving shifter in natural position & try to start car. With the key held into "start" with one hand, wiggle the shift lever through park & neutral

Take a look at the ballast resistor on firewall near voltage reg. could be burnout..

Check the condition of the yellow ignition wire which runs from the bulkhead junction to the starter relay. Any corrosion or fraying could exhibit these symptoms.

Guages or lights such as oil pressure light coming on in run and start mode? This info alone may or may not illuminate the ignition switch.

Thanks for the help everyone. Being a mechanic isn't my strong point. After I jiggled the yellow wire it started for me. Good enough for tonight to get it into the garage.

Well you may be in luck then. Disconnect one side of the battery. Take a wire brush or some fine sandpaper and clean the male connector where the yellow wire goes. Spay some electrical cleaner into the female connector of the yellow wire. Re-connect. Re-connect battery. You "may" have it fixed.

If you can work an electric meter, if it ever does it again, check for 12V at that yellow wire while someone turns the key to "start". If you have 12V & it won't start, then I'd suspect the starter relay itself (easy to change). If there's not 12V, then I'd suspect the ignition switch itself or the neutral safety switch (maybe take it to a shop).

I'm a firm believer in the 'ol jiggle test...(no jokes please!) It's a good way to find poor connections, the best thing is to eliminate possible points of failure start with the battery and work outward from there...use a voltage tester and a helper if you have one. If wiggling the yellow wire seems to work it could be the terminal end on the wire itself or the relay, or the common spot for trouble the firewall bulkhead connection..I might take a screwdriver, and on the relay, jump the battery terminal to the starter terminal as well, to eliminate the battery/starter/solenoid and their wiring as a cause...

Yes, service the bulkhead connector gently for good measure. The jiggle worked for me there.
