rocker shaft studs

I just purchased heads from 440 source and they recommend using studs in place of the rocker shaft bolts. I looked through the ARP cat and came up empty, any idea? thanks Pat
 
You can just get a quality stud that will provide the maximum thread engagement without bottoming out in the hole. The other end will probably be a fine thread so don't forget the nuts to match. Nothing magic about it.
 
If you can’t find a fine/coarse thread stud in the right length, most fastener supply houses like Fastenal have (or can order) fairly long set screws that work equally well as a stud. Set screws are normally made from high strength material and have a Class 3 thread which means you’ll have a tighter fitting thread in the head. I know 3/8-16 set screws are available in quarter inch increments up to at least 3” long. It won’t be self locking like a fine/coarse thread stud but I normally use Loctite on studs anyway.

Just out of curiosity why wouldn't you want to go to the bottom when using a stud? I always thought the more threads the better holding.
 
I've come to the conclusion that 440 Source doesn't know what they're talking about half of the time. I bought a set of heads, somehow lost the paper work, called for the torque spec they recommend, later found the paperwork, needless to say they were way off on the torque spec and the guy on the phone neglected to mention there were different specs whether using oil or assembly lube on the threads. You may also want to have a machine shop check the heads out before you just bolt them on. I had an extra valve seat on a couple of the springs on my heads and pieces of aluminum trash laying around. I didn't want a valve to open and dump anymore aluminum shavings into the chamber that may have been laying on top of the valves when I fired the engine.

I used my entire stock rocker set-up with no problems.
 
I am having the heads checked out by PAPP Racing here in Phoenix. One thing that I found odd about 440 source is that while they suggest using studs, they supply bolts with their rocker kits, and make no mention about studs in the add for their rocker's. One would think that if they suggest studs they would give that option. JMHO:)
