Not too crazy about the spring loaded ones but do the 'roller' types work? A roller that spans a bucket of water or other lethal mix. After being here 40 freaking years, I now have rats in my shop. Got one in a live tender trap but the mesh is really too big. Got the first one because he was dumb and got his hip in one square hole and a leg in another. Whacked him with a piece of round bar. The trap was only there for 30 minutes but the second time I set it, whatever that got into it got out. Don't feel like lining it with a finer mesh but will if it comes to that. Anyways, found evidence....rat poop but so far haven't found anything chewed.

I've found that the rollers are cheaply made and don't always roll that well, but.... they do work well. Just drill the hole in the bucket a little oversized, nice and smooth, so that the whole thing can turn if the rollers are not rolling.

That said, I upped my game to the trap door 5-gallon bucket lids (there are several manufacturers) and tossed the rollers. This style works just as well or better. Since I started using these two options .... no more mice problem. I keep one in the shop and one in front of the house garage where the drivers are parked in the driveway to protect them also.

Sorry, I have cannot comment on rat effectiveness. I think the coyotes get them all.

Where were you 30 minutes ago lol.....but I should have thought about doing that!
My apologies!
There's been one of these going at our acreage that hasn't been maintained for some years , but they keep piling in! The 5 gal pail is probly close to half full of carcasses

last year I used a 5 gallon bucket water about 8" deep and peanut butter half way down the inside of the bucket. got 6 overnight then 3 then 2 . they look for a home every winter about time to find that bucket again.

Best mouse trap ever made... cheap OJ bottle, some wire and a board. Don't forget the Peanut Butter !

Get a good cat/mouser

I did ever means of mouse traps & bait
still had them when I was down in Rancho Murieta
the new construction there was making them wonder, move about

a good mouser cat is great

the lil' green bait (Decon ?), I don't exactly remember the brand for sure
used in the black triangular traps (Decon ? brand)
(put a brick or something on top so they can't move it)
it works too
even if they get out,
when they drink water it bloats them & kills them post haste

we have a crapload of cats around here,
I don't have an issue here now, did for a couple years
I put a lil' dry food out for them (the cats) every so often so they visit regularly
the cats are 2 of my neighbors, anywhere 2-5 cats across the street,
are pure lil' killers
I watch them stalk stuff out back or in the easement beside me...
One lil' spotted grey & black female (fixed) is a deadly lil' cat,
she's a pure killer
she's been getting all kinds of rodents, baby turkey, quail, mice, rats & even squirrels too
they drop them off at the door sometimes, I think it's to "say thanks" like a gift to me
show them to me

the cats don't last long here either, unless pretty wise
or if the coyotes, bobcats, racoons, mountain lions, hawks
or owls especially get them,
just end up being a turd
every year a couple get killed, breaks the kids hearts

this is off my back deck, critters galore, coyotes about 5 months a year too
they eat a lot of rodents too, or stray cats

Are you out of ammo already..... it's only the 3rd of January.

I use 5 gallon buckets with about 2 gallons of old Anti-Freeze. I have a small board for them to crawl up with two screws at the end of the board to hold it on the buckets edge then peanut butter spread about 5 inches below the top on the inside. They fall in, die and never smell. They call them Adirondack mouse traps.. I have no pets near that building and take none in. If I did I would probably use drain oil instead...

Roller trap works great and is free. I've used beer cans on a dowel rod and smear of peanut butter on the can.

Spring traps are awesome for tight areas like around refrigerators.

Bait bags.
Just toss them, they chew and look for water, the water activates the poison. They die.
Don't leave them a water dish in the shop and you'll never know they were there.

I go oldskool spring trap for a quick clean kill. I need em dead but I don’t like needless suffering. I’ve had luck with them set up with a little peanut butter.

That said since I’ve been some kind of cat savior it’s not really an issue now, the other day one of them left the biggest rat I’ve ever seen in my life in the driveway under the Coronet.

Either the bucket, or snake size sticky pads. Traps are damn near useless, catching the odd mouse that slows down running across a trap.

Get'm clean and with a bit of thread they make a great Musky lure !! ;O)
