Well since I didn't get an answer on the -sticky thread I am re posting my questions here. Thanks in advance.

1974 440 wedge into a 67 coronet 500 w/ 318 v8.....727 trans...8 3/4 rear.

So from reading the foregoing I'm thinking that..
A. The motor will need correct mounts.
B. The K frame is good.
C. Need distributer wire lengthened.
D. Drive shaft shortened? Or not? Since I have a 727.
E. Will need a certain oil pan #? Other than the stock one on the 440?
F. Will need .96 torsion bars? Heavier duty shocks?

G. Anything else?

Thanks very much guys!

You have the big block trans correct? You will need the right motor mount brackets. The wiring is nothing. Dont sweat that. You dont necessarily need to change the front springs. The oil pan should fit if its out of a car. This is a basic swap. Dont over think it

May be able to use the original driveshaft . If not, one can be made. What rear end do you have?

swap....

Hemirebel.....The car came with a 318V8. and a 727trans.

(Up-sized radiator with outlets matching your 440 water pump?)

gdrill...The car came with a 26" radiator and large cooler.

Gary.....The rear end is an 8 3/4.

So guys, I guess my question is....Will the 727 I have mate up to the BB440? If it was mated to a 318? And if so, will the drive shaft be the same? Thanks. Randy.

SO, the trans is wrong. No adapter plate ? Cant a different bellhousing be put on and then it would work on a BB?
No, you will need a bigblock transmission.
The driveshaft should work.

I don´t believe ther are any adapter plates out there.
But a bb 727 can´t be hard or expensive to find.

Sigh....just one more part on the big pile of sh*t I need...lol.

The 971 oil pan for the big block is required unless you modify your Kframe

NEVERMIND the above statement! I thought you were putting the big block INTO a 74 BBody. Sell the 971 oil pan, they are in demand for 73+ SB to BB conversions

As for the oil pan to use...

If the 440 you have is unmodified from a car the water pump downleg will be on the passenger side whereas the 60's water pumps angled towards the drivers side... check where your outlet is on your radiator. the earlier ones are relatively easy to find so don't sweat it man

Front springs??

The Big Block 727 isn't that hard to find. It is the same length as the Small Block 727. The drive shaft is the same, cooler lines too.
Motor mount brackets might be found in nearby machine shops. I know guys that have 20 or more engines at their shops, often with the brackets still on them when they were pulled for rebuilding. Some guys drop off engines and never return. The rubber motor mounts can still be bought new. Same with the fan and crank pulleys. The easiest combination is the P/S, NON A/C arrangement. It has a deep Water Pump pulley with a single groove, a 2 groove crank pulley and thats it.
The exhaust can be log manifolds, Magnums or headers. On a mild 440, the Magnums add less than 10 HP, full length headers add less than 20. depending on your expectations, the cheap log style manifolds found on 383 2 barrels or C bodies may be good enough. Add at least dual 2 1/4" exhaust pipes and you'll be fine. Smaller than that will reduce midrange and top end HP. Axle gearing should be a 3,23 or 3.55 to give decent street performance.

Thanks Kern, that's all good info that I had not gotten from anyone else. I was mainly concerned with the whole SB/BB 727 differences. I knew about the motor mounts. I'm not sure yet what i'll do for exhaust headers but I have been watching several posts and thinking about my needs since the 440 wedge will have 540 HP. I intend to get an A/C system that fits under the dash and have the compressor hide under the alternator.
Front springs?? Ha HA I meant torsion bars, should I see about getting .96 bars? On the 727 I understand that the guts are interchangeable? So all I would need is a good core bigblock 727 to transfer my SB 727 guts into? Am I right?

****. too bad you're so far, I have 2 BB transmissions that I would give you for free!!

Do they weigh more than 70lbs? lol. yah, one of those would have to go on a pallet to be shipped I think. Don't know what that would cost.

I found out from my buddy today that there's a dude here local that has a school bus full of MOPAR tranny's. We are going to look tomorrow.

I checked today and the water pump outlet is straight down on the passenger side. IIRC water pump exit on big blocks is dependent on if they came with A/C, that also then affects lower rad hose.

Most LA small block (I know you have a poly) with A/C and big block with A/C have the opposite relative rad hose configuration :(

Right, I have to have a radiator made anyway so i'll have the outlets where I want them.

I got an answer today from SMR Motorsports about the trans adapter for a SB 727 to BB adapter. $579.00.

Also, Jamie Passon is putting together a quote for me on a swap kit to 4 speed. He has e-mailed me and called several times to get my wishes down pat. Much more than Brewers did. I sent the Brewers quote to him at his request with the prices missing so he could match. he assured me that he could do better. I expect to hear from him today.

In the 80's I did a 318 swap to a '69 440. At that time I just bought a donor car for all the pieces I needed, including swapping the k frame. The biggest handling improvements I made is when I changed all the rubber bushings to poly, larger torsion bars and larger sway bars.

If budget permits look at a tubular k frame. I have one in my cuda (made by Control Freak) and makes it so easy to work on with less in the way. Its costly but since I plan on having this car forever its damn well worth it. The rack and pinion steering is nice too.

Summit sells a cheaper bare bones tubular ones less than $600
