Semi-Retirement Jobs

I'm thinking of buying a dually pickup and a trailer to haul/deliver for hire.
Make sure to check into insurance requirements. The rules change when you go commercial.

I always thought I'd get a job selling snowmobiles in the summer for a retirement job. Now that I'm there, FUGGEDABOUDIT! I'm also less inclined to work on the rentals. As long as they cash flow I can write a check.

If you like driving perhaps driving the escort vehicle for oversized loads would work if you could get it on a part time basis.
A lot of used car lots here buy cars from the large auto auction in Toronto and hire drivers to bring them back to there dealership. I think there’s lots of driving jobs out there.

A friend did that well into his 80s, and continues to drive at 91. I hope the hell I'm that spry and energetic at that age!

I might look into being a driver like that. I know I'm sick of "cube world" and getting ready to retire.

I am only a few years away - but can retire somewhat early, in comparison.

I plan to do something just to keep me somewhat active, at this point probably something at a local golf course, either the pro shop, bar or even cutting grass (kinda preferred, get out there early and done and then hit the course) but then move to texas during the winter and help my brother in his race car shop while racing around the area all winter (plus hunting of course)

Check your local district requirements.

Here, the 4 hours you work are- 4:30 am to 6:30 am and then 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm...

...and you don't get paid for the time in between.
yes it is similar here .

i think it’s a cake job especially for semi retired. shop around for best wages as there is no set pay . i’m lucky in that one of the best pays is my own school district, and close to home …

A few years back, I worked a part time job for an autobody shop.
They did alot of work for car rental companies and needed extra help picking up and returning the vehicles.
Got paid per trip, so as long as they were busy, could make some extra money.

Our district always has aggressive marketing for bus drivers, and is constantly understaffed.

It's a demanding job with an odd schedule and you have to maintain a squeaky clean CDL.

...and put up with kids.

More and more businesses are going to 4 10 hr days. 4 or 5 businesses that I deal with on a daily basis have told me in just as many months lately that they are now closed on Fridays.

My dentist holds the record I'm aware of for oddest hours.

Monday: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
Tuesday: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
Wednesday: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
Thursday: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
Friday: closed

Good choice for many. I had the good fortune to have full careers in both "cube world" and driving over the road, no desire to do anything resembling either after I retired.

To add to my post as a Walmart greeter…..

Welcome to Walmart mam. Are those twin boys? “No! She said. Ones black and the other is mexican. How did you come up with the idea that they are twins”? “Well, he said, you’re pretty ugly and it’s hard to believe someone would bang ya, let alone twice!”

Walmart "greeters" have been replaced with "loss prevention" staff around here.

Interesting. My former dentist, who was a high school classmate did the same. Only she wouldn't see patients on Thursdays, when she caught up on the administrative stuff, and took Fridays off completely. She lived on a 70 acre farmette with stables and four horses, 10 minutes from the office, sold it for $1.2 million when she retired at 64, and sold the practice as well. Looked like the best gig of anyone I graduated with.

I completely retired in 2010 when I left working in Civil Service for the USAF. At that time I had a good military retirement, saved up a nice nest egg, receiving a VA Disability, and started on Social Security. Took it at 62 and never looked back. I have zero plans to ever work again as I have no need to jump back into the fray and drudgery of WORK!!! Y'all can do so if you choose, but there is no way I'll ever lift a finger to work ever again. Oh and doing just fine without it...cr8crshr/Bill:usflag::usflag::usflag:

Even though I'm still working 40 hours, I call what I'm doing now "semi-retired".
I used to do 3rd and 4th level IT support and planning for over 140 sites.
Now I do that plus level 1 and 2 stuff for just one site. Night and day stress level difference.
I have 20 months to go before I can draw pension.
I have made a tentative verbal offer for one year after that at the same salary but 4 days a week.
Really have no desire to work on someone else's schedule when my time is up other than that.
Plenty to do at home and in the shop.

Since retirement I've been accosted by many electrical powerline contractors to do large project management/construction supervision work on a project basis. The money would be great, but I don't want to get drawn back in. Besides being away from home for months at a time is a no go anymore.
I'm thinking maybe a mindless part time job like parts delivery guy sounds more appealing if I was so inclined.

school bus driver. in high demand and easy work . i’m making great money , state pension and summers off . i should of done this a long time ago …. i work 4 hours a day , they consider that full time . i could work more hours but not in my plan … don’t need too…
My dad did that when he sold his Construction company,
after I graduated HS 77'..
He sold everything his ranch & his Construction Co.
& moved with my bitch stepmother, my 2 brothers & 2 sisters
that live with him still, some 300+ miles north to Yreka...
Where she dumped his ***, for her old HS sweetheart a couple of years later,
after he put her through paid for her college, to get her psyc. degree...

Then he sold his livelihood, for her benefit
moved for her career, for her to be a school Psychologist...
He raised her kids, my 2 younger brothers graduated up there...
The 2 girls left with her...

He couldn't get any other jobs up there, there weren't any
other than a bartender or a liquor store clerk, type ****
So he;
Drove school bus for 2 years (no pension, **** hourly pay)
then moved back down here, after she dumped his ***...

He still drove a school bus for Tuolumne Co. schools
Old habits die hard, for 20 years from 1980-2000 Ca, P.S.E.A. Union...
His pension sucks ***, the pay sucked *** too
getting up at 4 am putting on chains, all winter sucked ***
& driving until all hrs of the night in inclement weather conditions sucked ***...

He also had to work the fires (on-call always, sucked ***),
work in the heat no A/C, driving everywhere, worked in the summer too,
or in the freezing *** cold, snowing like crazy, ice everywhere,
taking off & putting back on chains (in the worst condition, sucked ***)
you name it...

Not to mention HS student's issues/problems... :poke:

But now he claims that he liked it...
Has a crapload of stories about driving a bus, tons of people
I meet up here, he'll say "she or he used to ride his bus",
a lot of people about 50-ish now...
(I remember talking to him on the phone, hearing a lot of complaining,
bitching/moaning about the job
)
He did a lot of sports travel, mostly girls' sports teams,
was always home late, always gone somewhere...
He also worked in the high school's maintenance dept. (in the summers)
or security at sports events, during the school year, for some extra $$$...

It wasn't an easy life, that he could have had...
If he had just maintained a Contractor license, do work he knew well, great pay...

Was a damn good thing he had a good investment portfolio already
because he would NOT have one otherwise...

I’m thinking of pulling the retirement trigger early to mid 2025 after 31 years with a fantastic company.
If I find extra time on my hands and get bored (not likely) and since I fly so much in my job, and park at an off airport parking lot, I may want to drive a shuttle bus back and forth to from the lot to DTW
seems relaxing.

I worked as a courtesy shuttle driver for a dealership. It doesn’t get much easier than that.
