Semi-Retirement Jobs

I retired 1/1/23, I have way too many projects in the pipeline, I enjoy the heck out of retirement, thought I would need a part time job to keep me from being bored, I've been accused of being a workaholic (a 60hr work week is rather slow IMO) but I can't find a nearby job that pays $1,000 a day part time.
Life is short, I going wide open.

When I was operating the marina, i always had trouble staffing the gas dock, nobody wanted a job where you mostly assist ladies on and off the boat in scimpy attire while fueling is completed! when I retire, I'll be beating away anybody in line a head off me for that job!

I'm looking at Lowe's as that might be a good place to work.

I stopped in a Lowes over the weekend about 60 miles from my house because I was picking up a craigslist purchase and needed to use the restroom.

Lowe's is my "go to" spot for using the RR when I'm on the road.

I had considered a part time gig there in retirement, as there's one REAL close to my house, and it seems I'm always buying something from them.

The restrooms are always clean if the store is newer than say, 2005.

I wonder who has to clean them?

I bet it's "the new guy".

I retired 5 years ago and spent 4 years catching up on things around the house, did some traveling and relaxing. Then I got a little bored and missed working on cars after 50 years of doing paint & bodywork. So I started off doing little jobs but now it seems I'm almost back to where I was, NOT Retired. But when I got done with this job it made it seem worthwhile.

I cleaned the toilets on my first job in the trucking business, in 1977, when things got slow on the loading dock. I had a circular career, but I refused to go back to the very beginning when I retired.

I've had ONE job where I was required to clean toilets.
1986 full serve gas station.
The day shift pump attendant was the primary offender of throwing cigarette butts into the urinal.
Occasionally I would leave one in his coffee cup.
He never stopped despite being asked repeatedly, but I felt better.

I walked out of another job (TV repair apprentice) when, after a month on the job and getting brushed off repeatedly for the "apprentice" part, the receptionist informed me that it was now my responsibility to clean the filthy restroom that hadn't been cleaned in years.
I literally said "F you, and that", threw my van keys on the desk, and walked out.

Funny story time......
My first job ever was for an all inclusive "resort" in the Poconos. It really was marketed as a Farm Resort, where couples and mostly families would stay for a week and experience the farm life. It was owned/operated by an old German husband and wife who spoke no English. Their adult children ran the business like they were cousins of Adolf himself. My first day, I was assigned to clean the main hall restrooms. I didn't do a very good job and was banished to garden and meat house where the old man was in charge. After weeding what seemed like 45 acres of produce, "Papa" asked if I needed a drink. I had no idea what he was saying but just nodded my head yes. About 2 minutes later he came out with 2 16oz Stegmeirs, laughed and walked away. Boy did the weeding go fast after that. My Father picked me up afterwards, smiled and just said you better take it easy tomorrow. It was a great summer for a 14 yr old, the banquets were even better as we got to stay overnight. That old man taught me a lot about gardening and cooking meat in a smokehouse.

Very nice. Yours or a customer's?

I briefly had a job at a mortuary. I found out quickly that they prefer the terms 'burial' and 'cremation' instead of smoking or non-smoking.

If you like driving perhaps driving the escort vehicle for oversized loads would work if you could get it on a part time basis.
A lot of used car lots here buy cars from the large auto auction in Toronto and hire drivers to bring them back to there dealership. I think there’s lots of driving jobs out there.
Used to drive the dealer trades whenever the local dealer needed some extra help until my wife took on 3 cars to go 150 miles. They stopped for breakfast 90 miles out and when they got up to go one of her friends backed into one of the other cars so now there's two damaged new dealer cars. Next run she got a busted windshield somehow. She was pretty good about following trucks too close. Anyways, that closed down our driving. Forgot all about doing that again now that she's gone lol

Even though I have 45 years until I can retire, I was thinking about working part time at Victoria’s Secret.
...as a model????? I don't think your figure would attract any new business. :poke:

...and they don't like it when you smile a lot.

Our district always has aggressive marketing for bus drivers, and is constantly understaffed.

It's a demanding job with an odd schedule and you have to maintain a squeaky clean CDL.

...and put up with kids.
I considered the bus driving too until I thought about how we were on them lol
8 years will go fast ! seems like the years fly by as ya get older… hang on and get ready …
I started keeping a '5 year calendar count down' and several told me it would make the time go slower but didn't really notice that. It did keep me in check though for not doing stooopid stuff and getting fired....
I considered this, also, but Uber has taken away much of the shuttle business. The two airport shuttle services in Tucson have ceased operations. The Tucson Phoenix shuttle services are still around, but I'm not sure I want 5 hours of round trip driving on an interstate (I10) that has a fatal accident at least once every 24 hours.
Sounds like I-10 here too! Seems like it's always closed down for something or another.....hate that road.

Anything where I have to be on my feet for hours on end is not what I'm looking for!

I thought about a side gig but already was doing rear end work but that has slowed down a lot and I'm grateful for that lol. There's always way more that needs to be done around here besides doing work for others but did think about picking up work but after being retired for 18 years now.....just not that interested.

Costco seems like it would be a great gig for part time work. They hire a lot of older workers, people seem to love working there and the pay is very good. If I wanted to work that’s where I’d go first.

This looks a lot like what I painted my X. A 2003 Lexus color - Black Agate Pearl. Color?

It's actually Mopar's Octane Red. Was cloudy when I took the pictures. It really lightens up and pops in the sun.

our kids are decent as the transportation super and most of the principles don’t tolerate much foolishness. if something happens there fairly quick to look into it . keep in mind we a very rural , no big city attitudes here ….there’s 4 cameras running on the bus whenever she’s running, 3 inside 1 oncoming traffic so there’s no place to hide ( or room to lie ) ! but kids will be kids , i just got a bus monitor because some of my boys don’t listen well …

Hey guys, looking to cut back on my work hours and looking for some ideas of new jobs to apply to.

I'd like to work full time Mon-Thurs 8:30am-5pm but have Fri-Sun off. No weekends or holidays.

Anyone know or have a job that fits what I'm looking for?

Thanks in advance!
Due to my creative nature
(I've always got to keep my
hands busy, and my mind
centered on being inovative)
I took up the hobby of being
a silversmith.
I've invested in a rock saw,
a grinding bench, a casting
machine, and kilns.
I've been retired for 5 years
now. I don't answer to
nobody, set my own hours,
and enjoy seeing the
finished project.
And I'm always within
earshot of the call to dinner.
