Should I ditch the A833

Bought an A-833 with my 68 Coronet, not sure if I should even attempt to run it.

I was planning a 512 stroker with a dana 60 rear end, but the A-833 seems to be the weak point, 440 source claims 650-700hp on their ported heads, and to run that kind of power through even an 18-spline 833 is a gamble.

Passon is offering a new Hemi overdrive 833 that might be able to take it, but it is also 3 grand alone.

Friends have suggested of just running a lockout 727 and I have seen that they can handle the power, but this will be a street car and I would've liked it to stay authentic with the 4 speed. Is there any compromise?

Run the four speed,it should be up to the task.I run that much through a 23 spline.I dont try to hook it up tho.I let it spin the tires. That may be why it works for me.

I plan on upgrading the shocks and the leaf springs, doing up the sway bars but I don't foresee any trips to the track.

All i've read is that they can usually stand up to 600hp if youre nice to em, but then if youre not they usually break on an annual basis, either breaking the input shaft or stripping off gear teeth in 3rd or at the cluster.

That is an awesome tranny it will hold up just fine!

I think you are on the edge. The guys that I have seen at the drags with serious cars run Jericos or some other type of crash box. If you are road racing then it should be fine, but if you want to drop the hammer at 5 KRPM with slicks you might be picking up pieces eventually. However I did know a guy that ran a 68 Charger with a 440 and it was running low 11's high 10's. To my knowledge he never grenaded his 23 spline.

How much power did Sox & Martin put through their 4-speed? They did use an A833 with Hurst linkage & shifter, didn't they? I am sure their car was putting out over 650 horse.

The key here is curb weight. How much does the car weigh and how hard do you plan on launching it. 5-600 lbs. of curb weight can make a big difference when it comes to what will hold up in a stick car.

I say run it. Can't be any harder on it than this guy.

As far as I know they ran the slick shifted hemi box but I bet they went through a couple. You can run anything you want - once.

Run it! You blow it up. So what. You have it, it costs nothing.
Can't say I plan on dropping the clutch at 5k with slicks. I did plan on some meaty tires but only giving it the gas once its already rolling. However I did not want the trans to limit the amount I wanted to build up the engine to either. I read about putting larger bearings in it as we'll to help it use some of that power. To stay authentic though I wanted a Hurst 4 speed in it. Right now it's a slant six with a 904 so I was going to rebuild and possibly modify the 833 for installation behind my big block. Also going to require the complete conversion to the car but there are plenty of avenues to get that done through.

The 68 and later hemi box has the largest bearing you can put in. It uses the 308SG8 but it's no longer available. However, Passon had them made through a third party supplier. 30 yrs ago you could get a replacement that was close but it had to be used with a shim because it was thinner than the original. That bearing was the 308LOE and it is also unavailable.

Mr. 4 Speed. May he rest in peace. When men were men.

I'll probably be sourcing my parts from Passon anyways since I can get the parts I also need for the 4 speed conversion as well. The 833 I'm getting will be a 23 spline version but if I can beef up the internals it should hold up

The 18 spline is its own gear set with coarser pitched gears then the 23 spline. There is no such thing as the 23 spline version. What you are probably referring to is the older 18 spline that used the 307 bearing. If you have one of those you can put all the gears into any large bearing case and tailshaft. If you have a gear set and need parts let me know.

Passon offers this new kit in 18 spline thats sorta what im looking for, just need to put the components in the case.

Right now the gearset that id have is for 23 spline model.

I have his gear set but haven't run it yet but it did go together nicely. If you have a big bearing case you are good to go.
