I just purchased a 1966 coronet 440...i have a few questions

The worst i think of my problems is that when putting gas in the car from 1/4th i can only get 5 gallons in it..that 5 gallons go in easy...then after that it wants to over flow and gurgle...why would it work good at one point and bad at another?

Ive never driven a carbed car before this but the gas pedal seems to have a lot of play before it actually starts to pull on the carb...is there an easy fix for this or is that the way it is? And being this way it seems like you cant get WOT

Taking off from stop signs and lights..you give it some gas and it takes a second before it wants to go..is this the way the 727 is or does something need adjusted?

My power steering works great when you are moving..but when you are stopped its like you dont have it at all

Im just a newer car guy that works on my cars and just got into older vehicles...im hoping my questions aren't too dumb

Hi Avenger. Welcome to the party...

What reading does the fuel gauge tell you when it starts to overflow? Maybe the tank is really full, and the sending unit isn't set right.

It should be simple enough to adjust the carb linkage, look for a nut to loosen on the intake manifold, holding the throttle cable. Play with it. You should have carb plate opening almost immediately when hitting the pedal. This might cure your lack of full opening as well. As far as you know, is the engine stock and original?

Hesitating when taking off from a light could indicate that your carb accelerator pump isn't adjusted right, or even working. Or maybe someone has tampered with the secondary flap, if it's a Carter AVS.

Your power steering should be easy to turn when stopped, so start with the obvious like checking the fluid levels and belt tension.

The fuel gauge reads Half when it stops....the gas in the tube eventually gurgles down though...

The nut on the intake is the black thing infront of the carb with springs going to it? right?

How do you check the carb accel?

Thanks man!

Sounds like a vent issue in the gas tank. Pressure is building up in the tank and the air can only escape through the same tube the gas is going in, hence the gurgle.
Is the trans slipping. Do the rpms flare up before it goes? Or does the engine stumble? Dependine on the answer will determine which way to go in diagnosing.
Follow the throttle cable off the carb. The first place it attaches, the bracket on the intake, is where your adjustment is.

Alright... I dont think the trans is slipping the rpms are steady..they dont jump or anything...although in reverse the idle is lower than in drive at a stop

best way to check carb linkage is to have someone slowly push the gas peddal while you are looking at it.follow the cable off the linkage toward the firewall and you will see the spot were you can adjust it.it should start to pull the carb linkage as soon as the person starts to push the pedal.adjust to make it tight.

The issues presented are all relatively easy to diagnose and repair, though the carb probably needs a rebuild, and the P/S may need front end and/or a P/S pump rebuild. This is not a slam, but you may be best off having a shop check things out.

The guy i bought it from said they just rebuilt the carb recently...hopefully he was being truthful...

EDIT: looks lik not..the carb does leak some..ugh...how hard is it to find someone to rebuild a carb? or is it better to get another carb? My buddy said it could be the needle valve sticking...It only seems to do it when its shut off though....

Do you know what kind of carb it is? Post a picture for us if you're not familiar with them.

Now its making a screechy kinda sound....kinda like a jet coming from the P/s Pump or the water pump or alternator...how do you take the tension off the p/s belt to see if its that or not by taking the belt off?

screechy may mean it's low/out of fluid. check that first...what kind of motor is it anyways???

the carb linkage is pretty easy to adjust; unhook the cotter pin, slide the end off, and turn it towards you (righty-tighty) (so the arm moves back towards the firewall) do it little by little until it touches the knob coming off the carb with no/or little slop.

this is a pic of where the carb linkage is (440 cubic inch)....

Ok ill mess with the linkage soon...and it doesnt seem to be low..there is fluid in the..reservoir..i could try adding more but it seems to be at the right point...

Btw its a 318 2BBl Poly... And that engine bay looks so familiar..my car is the same color!

So i got my reman carb today...i bought a reman so i could drive the car while rebuilding the other so i can learn about carbs in detail....the carb that is on the car now is a stromberg...and the one i got is a carter...

It is missing this piece....im guessing its vital? but the stromberg carb doesnt have it...

im getting a refund for that carter carb and i rebuilt my stromberg today..seemed pretty easy..took about an hour and a half..and 2 hours total for everything....she runs like a TOP now..and doesnt sputter at idle..its truly amazing :blob1::upside down:

Avenger, what part of Ohio are you from? I'm in South Point, and could offer a hand every now and then when you get way over your head on something. Looks like you're getting some sound advice, but it also sounds like the car might not have had a very knowledgeable previous owner, since most of these problems seem to just be minor adjustment things

Yeah i would agree...who ever restored it did an alright job..then seemed to sell it to someone unknowing? I live in lancaster
